Guildford upper High Street empty shops

November 30, 2021

A continuation of last week in the High Street, photograph the empty shops in the upper High Street.

This is not at the level of Aldershot, but no other town centre I have visited has this number of empty shops. It only serves to highlight the failure of Experience Guildford and why it must be wound up.

I only noted from Jeffries Passage upwards. The upper High Street where I rarely venture, I did not count, found as many empty shops as North Street.

What can only be described as perverse, Experience Guildford fly post many of the shop windows of the empty shops to highlight the scale of retail devastation.

Experience Guildford and Town Rangers hide behind a faded red door in Tunsgate.

What must be a very rare sighting, as Town Rangers are very rarely seen, a Town Ranger was spotted mid-afternoon in Tunsgate headed for the faded red door. If spot one, please take a photo of a rare sighting and post on social media.

If Experience Guildford is not wound up, which is the preferred scenario, then there must be reform, board removed, senior management fired, town rangers fired, and one vote one business.

Are the local community aware Experience Guildford place a levy on every local business in the town centre, a levy in today’s harsh retail environment which local businesses can ill afford, a levy for which they see no return? Are the local community aware of how votes are distributed based on rateable value, corporate chains have more votes even though they have no interest in Guildford other than the wealth they suck out of the town centre? This is like a rigged election in Vladimir Putin’s Russia, fair elections are held, only Putin decides who the candidates will be. Should HSBC have a seat on the board when they finance fossil fuel companies which is contrary to the declaration of Guildford as a green borough?

Not recorded last week, empty shops in Swan Lane.

Atto

November 30, 2021

Atto, a new Korean restaurant in Swan Lane where once Costa. Hanki in Jeffries Passage closed Tuesday lunchtime, give atto a try.

Lunchtime busy, but not too busy, about half full, a steady flow of customers taking their lunch out.

Staff pleasant and helpful, described all their dishes, food was good, reasonable portion size if not generous, I had to stop the girl piling more in my pot. I had sweet and sour chicken on a bed of rice. The juices from the sweet and sour, seeped down into the rice.

Unlike disgusting Pick A Bap in Farnborough, the food looked fresh. The girl said they empty after three hours, clean out the tin, bring out fresh food. Whilst I was there, chef added fresh food, stirred the tins.

Only too happy to give me a drink of water, filtered water.

Not sure what to do when finished. Are we meant to clear the tables? There was a box for cutlery. I did what others did, tidied up, left on the tray.

Covid biosecurity good: Tables clean, staff wearing masks, hand sanitiser. It could be improved still further by making Deliveroo wait outside and handed their delivery, if enter, wear mask and remove crash helmet.

Guildford cold damp last day of November

November 30, 2021

A cold damp day, 10C not as cold as a few days ago, but nevertheless felt cold.

First day mask wearing mandatory in shops and on public transport. Nowhere 100% compliance.

Shop displaying sign mask wearing personal choice. No, it is mandatory, £200 fine.

Illustrates yet another Experience Guildford fail. Could they not have gone round and advised all the small businesses mask wearing mandatory, £200 fine? Even better, run off posters, Mask Wearing Mandatory, £200 fine?

Lunch at atto, new Korean in Swan Lane, formerly Costa. Staff pleasant and helpful, described all their dishes, food was good, reasonable portion size, if not generous, I had to stop the girl piling more in my pot.

Only too happy to give me a drink of water.

Not sure what to do when finished. Are we meant to clear the tables? There was a box for cutlery. I did what others did, tidied up, left on the tray.

I followed up last week, photographed the empty shops in the upper High Street.

On my way to Krema, a very rare sight, a Town Ranger. What are they for? No one knows.

Cappuccino at Krema. They now even have guest coffee.

Look in M&S.

Wait at Costa, before cross over to my train.

Yobs in my carriage, feet on seats, no masks.

Pick A Bap

November 30, 2021

Pick A Bap, a Korean restaurant in a grotty shopping centre.

Pick a Bap opened a couple of years ago. It was not good then. Had it improved? Yesterday I paid a visit, ordered some food, in many ways surprised it was still open.

It was empty when I walked in. The shopping centre in which it is located, deserted, many empty units.

I asked of what was sitting in the tins, sitting for how long I hate to think. It was mid-afternoon. From ther look of the contents I guess all day.

A sign says all need to know, Food Prepared Fresh Daily. Bread fresh each day yes, food no, I want cooked fresh.

Asked to tell me what the food was, they refused.

I pointed at one dish, spicy chicken. Yes, with rice please.

It was not good, a fair description would be to say disgusting.

I asked for water. They refused, pointed to a chiller cabinet with bottled water.

Awful music blaring out.

Plastic utensils. Wooden chopsticks loose in a box.

Covid biosecurity non-existent: No hand sanitiser as I walked in, or on tables. Staff not wearing masks. On leaving I used hand sanitiser outside the barber shop next door (it too was empty).

Compared with a couple of years ago when it opened, it was no surprise I was their only customer, it was not good then, if anything, has got worse. Food and service poor.

I cannot compare with food in Korea, but compared with Korean street food in Berlin, two Korean restaurants in Guildford, it compares very unfavourably.

Cold miserable afternoon Farnborough

November 29, 2021

A sprinkling of snow on the ground in the morning. Not as cold as last few days, maybe absence of cold north wind

Luckily I saw a bus coming down the road. Most of the passengers wearing masks, a handful not. Students Farnborough Tech board bus, half not wearing masks.

Early afternoon Farnborough dead, street deserted, shopping centre deserted.

I had wished to visit a coffee shop cum sandwich shop Philly’s Coffee and Sandwiches but not in the centre. Maybe try another day.

Late lunch at a Korean place Pick A Bap. I tried when it opened a couple of years ago. It was not good then, if anything, has got worse. Food and service poor. Food disgusting. Chicken and rice not good. A sign says all need to know, Food Prepared Fresh Daily. Bread fresh each day, food no, I want cooked fresh. Food in metal boxes, probably been siting there all day. Asked to tell me what the food was, they refused. Asked for a glass of water, refused, pointed to a chiller counter where bottled water on sale. Awful music blaring out. Covid biosecurity non-existent. No hand sanitiser as I walked in, or on tables. Staff not wearing masks. No surprise I was the only customer. On leaving I used hand sanitiser outside the barber shop next door (it too was empty).

I thought maybe a coffee in a coffee in the town centre. Closed.

A tacky Christmas market of a couple of stalls, tat and disgusting German sausages.

Grotty shopping centre mainly empty units.

I expected the main street to be empty shops. Surprisingly not, but now sunk to the level of Aldershot, large number of dhsgusting junk food outlets.

Fish n chip shop has gone. The only surprise not closed years ago. Always empty, fish n chips disgusting, fish never fresh.

Worth a visit? Most definitely not.

England new coronavirus restrictions

November 28, 2021

Emergence of a new covid-19 mutation in South African, UK has announced new restrictions.

Too little, and why the delay? Requirement to wear masks, will only come into force on Tuesday, and why only public transport and shops, though a small step in the right direction?

New measures include:

  • From Tuesday, face coverings will once again be compulsory in shops and on public transport
  • All contacts of suspected Omicron cases will be required to self-isolate for 10 days. This is regardless of a person’s vaccination status
  • Anyone entering the UK will require a PCR test by the end of the second day after their arrival and will need to self-isolate until they have a negative result. The change will be brought in “as soon as possible” following agreement with the other UK nations (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)
  • The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) – the UK’s vaccine advisory body – will consider giving the booster vaccine “to as wide as group as possible”. It will also reduce the gap between the second dose and booster

Measures on mask wearing should never have been relaxed. Why does it not apply to hospitality, to places where people gather such as theatres?

Utter garbage from Hospitality UK, that mask wearing on public transport will hit public confidence. It is passengers not wearing masks that dents public confidence, that makes people reluctant to use public transport.

We need to be careful not to lump all hospitality together, a coffee shop or restaurant does not pose the same risk as a binge drinking bar or nightclub.

What we do know about Omicron, a new covid-19 mutation, is that it is highly transmissible, has large number of mutations, may not be recognised by antigens, which renders vaccines less effective. All the more reason to bring in measures to slow the spread. We saw how fast Delta spread when the government was slow to act.

  • place all countries in Africa on the Red list
  • random testing of all arrivals into the UK
  • mask wearing indoors and on public transport
  • work from home if possible
  • close nightclubs and binge drinking bars
  • social distancing
  • certificate double vaccinated to enter bars, coffee shops, theatres

The vaccine certificate would be scanned with a QR scanner to permit entry, green tick to enter, red cross not permitted, but if not permitted would advise what to do, for example vaccinated or a negative lateral flow test valid for 48 hours.

In Athens, require vaccine certificate double vaccinated which is scanned to enter bar, coffee shop, restaurant, theatre, shops. Failure to comply 500 euros fine, establishment 5000 euro fine and closed. To enter a building or travel on public transport mask wearing mandatory, 100% compliance.

Two flights from South Africa to Schiphol, sixty-one passengers tested positive for covid-19, of these thirteen were found to be infected with Omicron. Why was UK not acting as Schiphol, isolating and testing every passenger on flights from South Africa?

It should be a requirement, as is already the case for many countries, negative PCR test result within 48 hours prior to travel, in addition to negative PCR test and self isolation once in the UK.

UK has blocked relaxation of patents on coronavirus vaccines. UK is sitting on stocks of vaccines that it is unlikely to use. These stocks, within a month of expiry, should be shipped to poorer countries to help with their vaccination programmes.

North Street Guildford empty shops

November 26, 2021

A repeat of the exercise of Tuesday, today photograph the empty shops in North Street.

I did not count, but I find as the High Street, many empty shops.

North Street runs parallel to the High Street.

Today busy, market day, other days quiet.

What can only be described as perverse, Experience Guildford fly post empty shop windows to highlight the scale of retail devastation. Not as bad as Aldershot, but far worse than any town centre I have visited.

Experience Guildford and Town Rangers hide behind a faded red door in Tunsgate.

Sightings of Town Rangers are very rare, if spot one please take a photo and post on social media.

Surrey Advertiser, ironically today’s edition, has finally woken to the the scandal on their doorstep. Will they act for local businesses and campaign for Experience Guildford to be wound up, or at the very least to be reformed?

Next visit, upper end of High Street.

Cold wet afternoon in Guildford

November 26, 2021

Raining this morning. Setting off for the station, raining, not wishing to be cold and wet, I grabbed an umbrella, it stopped a couple of minutes later. Nuisance of an umbrella to carry around all afternoon.

Walking to the station, heading south, low sun in my eyes, blackest sky I have ever seen. It was as though I was heading into the apocalypse.

Many people about as I leave Guildford Station head into North Street. Then I realise, Black Friday, stupid American import. One retailer Black Friday, all have to offer Black Friday deals. I looked in a couple of retailers. Amazing deals, no. Trash they obviously wanted to get shot of.

A detour to Lush. I compliment on pulling the plug on facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, TikTok. I say do not delete accounts, leave dormant. Run off flyers and posters, encourage others to follow their excellent example.

Facebook a necessary evil, but no excuse to use Instagram, WhatsApp etc when alternatives exist.

Lush are not participating in Black Friday. Encourages wanton consumerism.

Riverrford have the correct approach. £15 voucher to spend to thank all their customers.

A roasting tray in Robert Dyas, heavy, well made, but not reduced, £9-99.

Another detour, I look in the new Korean restaurant in Swan Lane where was Costa. Very rough. Loud music not pleasant. Young man who I had found leafleting on Tuesday in North Street thanks me for my helpful advice.

Walk up North Street, photographing empty shops, a repeat of the exercise of Tuesday in the High Street.

As I walk back down, I notice a shop I had walked past, a zero waste shop. A good range of stock, unlike Zero which had nothing. But sadly no customers until a schoolgirl pops in to buy a bar of olive oil soap. I buy muesli.

A few items off the greengrocer, cheeese off the French cheese stall. The stall selling coffee has gone, which is good. If wish to buy coffee beans, visit Krema, end of Tunsgate.

It keeps drizzling of rain.

Lunch at Hanki. Prawns and rice. Deliveroo serfs are a pain, do not seem to know what a door is for. They are also a disease vector. Should wait outside.

Cappuccino and flapjack at Krema.

Look in Lakeland. Again Black Friday not worth knowing about. Roasting tray same price as Robert Dyas, but poor quality.

Return to Robert Dyas, buy roasting tray. Two years guarantee. I query what use a two year guranatee for a roasting tray? Will it malfunction?

Very cold. Give M&S a miss.

Miss train, wait in Costa for next train. I notice how dirty are the chairs.

Very cold November afternoon Aldershot and Farnham

November 25, 2021

Sunny and very cold, cold north wind blowing.

Early afternoon, over 40 minutes wait for a bus, service that should be every 10 minutes. Sometime before 1400 bus shown 3 minutes failed to turn up. 1406 bus cancelled. 1432 two buses, another bus a couple of minutes behind. Four, maybe five, buses in opposite direction.

Entire day screwed as no time left for what I wished to do.

Ayam woku at Indonesian street food restaurant in Aldershot. At least ten minutes before woman emerges from the back to take my order.

Just make bus for Farnham.

Traffic jam when hit Farnham. Hop off bus and walk along the River Wey.

Too late to visit Coffee Gems.

Cappuccino at The Coffee Can in Gostrey Meadow. Too cold for coffee on the street.

Get warm at Electric Cycle Cafe. Espresso and a flapjack.

Look in Robert Dyas, but no time for a proper look around.

Mince pies from Cook. My phone does not work. Card only. Lady kindly gives me the mince pies. These are the best mince pies anywhere. Nothing else compares.

Quick run round Waitrose.

Not long to wait for a bus, 1750 from The Borough.

Aldershot, bus driver jumps red light. He actually took no notice of red light. I at first thought car coming in from the right had jumped red lights until I look up and see it is the bus driver who had jumped the red lights. It was only quick action by the car driver that avoided an accident. Passengers shot out of their seats. It could have been worse, luckily no one hurt or injured. At the Bus Station I tell bus driver he must report himself for what happened.

Zero

November 23, 2021

Zero, a community hub cum zero waste shop with focus on climate.

ReSpace in action, a large empty retail unit, recycled on behalf of the local community, run by volunteers, lots of little areas suitable for informal meetings, a small stage to host talks, a little eatery (but by no means a coffee shop), a zero waste area (but so far no stock), a seed bank, books, visual displays.

Very much work in progress, my thoughts should therefore bear that in mind.

Please no, the sweets, the only stock in the zero waste zone, focus on quality, loose nuts, cereals, grains, muesli, rice etc. In addition, washing up liquid, shampoo. Never loose coffee beans. They oxidise.

Olive oil and rapeseed oil is a possibility, but I have reservations. It very quickly goes rancid. I would rather see high qulity cold pressed, extra virgin, rapeseed oil and olive oil in bottles.

I buy green olive oil in Athens, it is the very first pressing, and it will have a provenance of where it came from.

A visit to Hisbe in Brighton to check out what they do, is a must.

Serious thought needs to be given to an in-house coffee shop. But not easy. Needs a crowd funder to buy or lease a decent espresso machine (cheap machines a waste of money). Then need a skilled barista or baristas. Would there be baristas in Guildford willing to put in a few volunteer hours? They in turn could show others how to, a valuable life skill. Next it would need planning consent for A3 use. Currently a bean -to-cup machine, a stop gap but by no means ideal.

ReSpace: We recycle materials, why do we not recycle people and buildings? A planning designation, owner pays no businesses rates, peppercorn rent, building brought back into productive use. For the owner, if the building in use, it does not deteriorate.
