Sea bream Spartiatis fish restaurant

May 30, 2019

On my last visit, half a dozen tables, tonight busy, or relatively busy compared to near empty.

Previous visit, a starter, bread, not tonight, main dish sea bream only.

Sea bream good, but not as good as previous visit.

As I was finishing I was brought a dish of mussels and rice. I have no idea why.

On leaving I  asked were they now busier or only tonight?

The last four days businesses has improved.

As everywhere, business being killed by all-inclusive hotels.

Spartiatis fish restaurant overlooks Konnos Bay. Not that can see anything at night.

The place for fresh caught fish, Demetrion at Liopetri River.

The place to not eat, Ocean Basket, the McDonald’s or KFC of seafood, the fish not fresh.

Blue Spice

May 28, 2019

Blue Spice is acknowledged as one of the premier restaurants in Cyprus, dining in our restaurant is a gastronomic experience. – Blue Spice

Pernera is one of those places best avoided, all-inclusive hotels, which in turn attracts bottom end of tourist market. As with Protaras, bars and restaurants competing with all-inclusive, competing with each other in a race to the bottom.

But as I was passing through Pernera, decided to eat at Blue Spice, or at least a friend decided for me when she dropped me off saying it had good reviews

A big mistake.

A strange set up, a very large restaurant surrounding a swimming pool. Also as I discovered later, an art gallery. It also appeared to be part of a larger complex including accommodation.

Souvlaki, or as they insisted on calling it it kebab, was not good. Far worse than No 1 or Vangelis in Protaras and that was not good either.

Very poor quality compared with Plaka in Athens.

As I was thinking of leaving, musicians started to arrive.

It could only get worse I thought, live music.

I could not have been more wrong. Far better than the so-called entertainment in the bars and hotels in Protaras

A guy on electric violin, a guy on keyboards and a female vocalist.

They did not play, they improvised, at one point the violinist was looping.

I asked and learnt they play every Tuesday night.

No way would I recommend Blue Spice to eat, but worth turning up around 2130 for a drink and settling down for the music.

They played a solid two hour set if not longer until around midnight.

A premier restaurant it is not, a gastronomic experience it is not, not unless count gastronomic disaster as an experience, but worth a visit for the trio who play Tuesday night.

Two places worth trying. Demetrion fish restaurant at Liopetri River and Kamasias in Paralimni.

Cappuccino Paul’s Coffee Roasters

May 27, 2019

Paul’s Coffee Roasters a micro-roastery and coffee shop in the back streets of Larnaca.

Very pleasant ambience, not only the coffee shop abut also the courtyard out the back.

As walk in, coffee roaster displayed on the left on show in the window, counter to the right in front.

The only coffee shop apart from Outpost Coffee where I have found Gina, the only coffee shop where I have found in use. Interestingly, not only used as pour over cf V60 or Chemex, also used for making tea.

Excellent selection of reading material, Standart and Another Escape. This is becoming a standard feature of quality coffee shops, quality reading to match the coffee.

I suggested add Drift, Ambrosia, possibly Om Nom.  In Refinery and SoHo House Berlin I came across several interesting magazines that I had not seen before, BRYGG, The Beam and KinFolk.

My cappuccino excellent.

I would have liked a pour over but no time. As good a reason as any to return.

Located near St Lazarus Church in the backstreets behind the seafront.

Yuzu signature drink Nick’s Coffee Bike

May 27, 2019

Ideally Yuzu signature drink requires Yuzu marmalade and single origin coffee from Tanzania.

Made do with marmalade from breakfast and Hasbean espresso blend.

Fresh picked mint from a couple of hours earlier.

Result was good, though would have been excellent with Tanzania coffee.

Followed by excellent cappuccino.

Yuzu signature drink very refreshing on a hot day.

Yuzu signature drink designed by Japanese World Champion barista Yuko Inoue.

Recommend marmalade from a local producer, reuse the jars to serve the drink.

Ayia Napa International Sculpture Park

May 27, 2019

Fifteen minutes wait whilst change from local bus to InterCity bus.

Time for a brief walk through Ayia Napa International Sculpture Park.

A couple of brain-dead pig-ignorant Russian tourists who think OK to climb onto sculptures for selfies. When told to get off, they ask why. When they refused I offered to call the police.

Kuzo signature drink Café Amárena

May 26, 2019

Before trying Kuzo signature drink tried the Tanzania coffee from Dark Woods as V60 and Chemex, Japanese iced filter or as Greeks call it cold dripped coffee.

This was a mistake. Used too much of the limited supply supply of coffee, and if had been Chemex only, could have tasted the coffee as it cooled.

Method used, half the water, the other half as ice, coffee instantly chilled as drips through into the ice.

Next Kuzo signature drink with what little coffee was left.

It was, as all who tried agreed, an excellent refreshing drink for a hot day.

Kuzo signature drink designed by designed by Japanese World Champion barista Yuko Inoue using Kuzo marmalade and coffee from Sambewwe famers cooperative in Tanzania.

The Barn Sambewe – washed – Bourbon – high acidity – plum, dark berries, vanilla.

Dark Woods Blackburn Estate – washed – Kent and Nyassa – black tea, licorice, toffee, citrus, blackcurrant.

Mint fresh picked lunchtime.

Earlier had tried same drink at Miyu Coffee made with taf espresso blend. A big difference using Tanzanian single origin coffee beans.

Noticeable the Dark Woods beans very small.

Starbucks Protaras

May 26, 2019

Starbucks Protaras opened end of season last year. On the corner of the road leading down to Fig Tree Bay. Always empty.

Not somewhere I would be seen dead, but out of curiosity I walked in.

Staff with glum faces. No one spoke. No, hello, how are you, may we help you, would you like a coffee.

I walked back out, still glum faces.

One minute down the road on the left overlooking Fig Tree Bay, Miyu Coffee serving excellent coffee supplied by Taf.

Sea bream at Spartiatis fish restaurant

May 24, 2019

Spartiatis is a fish restaurant overlooking Konnos Bay, not that can see anything at night.

Walk down an unlit road, passed a run down block that appears to be inhabited by gypsies.

I paid a visit last night.

I ordered sea bream, fresh caught every day, or so I was assured.

First I was brought bread in a basket, thinly sliced courgettes and what looked like chips.

Both tasted ok, but it seemed odd to bring vegetables first then wait until main dish arrived, or eat now?

It turned out was a starter, which I only realised when main dish was brought, sea bream with a small salad and a side plate of chips.

What I thought was chips was not. What it was I do not know.

Sea bream was excellent, the chips not so.

A quiet location, no music.

Only half a dozen tables, if that, the new norm with the tourist industry collapsing, made worse by all-inclusive hotels which attracts the dregs of the tourist industry, drives away the quality tourists and no money flows into the local economy.

As I was leaving, I queried the sad state of affairs, the lack of diners. They told me it was like this every night weekdays.

I was tempted to hop on a bus into Protaras for an ice cream at either Café Amárena or Patisserie Amelie, but decided on yoghurt from nearby shop, then no too tired.

Try Papa’s fish and chips (a fish restaurant)  or Kamasias. Both are in Paralimni

Or during the day, Demetrion at Liopetri River.

The place to not eat, Ocean Basket, the McDonald’s or KFC of seafood, the fish not fresh.

Jasmine Micro Roastery

May 23, 2019

Coffee shop and coffee roastery.

I arrived after they had closed.

The barista and coffee roaster had already left as also runs a restaurant.

I had a chat with the owner. He offered V60, hot or cold. I chose cold.

Half the water, drips through to a carafe with ice the other half of the water to be instantly chilled.

This I had with one of their little cakes. These are made by the restaurant using ingredients from associated shop, thus closing the loop of a circular economy. One of the cakes dark chocolate based was using chaff from the coffee roasting.

I suggested could also use spent coffee grounds.

I was initially offered cold brew. This was concentrated watered down.

Not the way to make cold brew unless using the cold brew concentrate as a base for something else, for example a cocktail.

I had a little look around the associated shop. Trying hard to be ethical.

I advised the shampoo they are selling Faith in Nature can be bought in bulk, five litre containers and customers refill. As happens at Dash Vegan Zero Waste Shop.

They had ecoffee cup, also the very expensive reusable cups kleen canteen I have only ever seen in 200 Degrees Nottingham Station.

Green and Black’s is Cadbury’s, now owned by Kraft, it is not quality chocolate, adds palm oil.

Whole Earth I would not touch with a barge pole.

Located 20-30 minutes walk from Larnaca Marina, inland from Larnaca Harbour. A not very pleasant location.

Cappuccino Nick’s Coffee Bike

May 23, 2019

The place to have a coffee in Larnaca if not Cyprus Nick’s Coffee Bike outside Larnaca Marina.

I stopped had a cappuccino and interesting conversation.

As always coffee excellent, as always stay longer than anticipated.

Very clever design of loyalty card. Each time stamped adds a man on a bicycle.
