Caphinique

February 16, 2026

A couple of weeks ago, too late for Vibe, was not going to make my train, I decided to stop off at Caphinique, a Vietnamese coffee.

It took so long to barely drip through, I nearly missed my train.

Saturday, I decided to have lunch at Caphinique.

I stopped at Caphinique and had beef pho. Ok, not great. Not the quality of Viet 80 or the Japanese ramen noodle restaurant in Hockley top of the street from Effy.

I learnt later from a Vietnamese friend, the food was not good. Her recommendation was for the coffee.

I learnt today from another Vietnamese friend,  Caphinique is Vietnamese for coffee.

Vibe with St Valentine’s Day

February 16, 2026

Vive with, a Hong Kong Chinese coffee shop, located in Hounds Gate, a side street opposite St Peters Church.

Vibe was very busy. A very long wait for my iced matcha latte and another long wait for my espresso. Both were excellent.

Different clientele to in the week, when mainly young Chinese. Chatting, they had gone out of their way fo find Vibe. Were they impressed? Yes.

Nottingham St Valentine’s Day

February 16, 2026

Sunny in the morning. Rain for at least 35 days. A day out. Very cold. Frost in the morning.

Train to Nottingham. No WiFi. No usb charging. At least not crowded.

Widespread flooding.

Railway bridge over the river Trent on leaving Newark, almost touching the bridge. Scary.

Footbridge closed to leave Nottingham Railway Station by the side entrance. This is not acceptable.

Brain-dead Nottingham University students blocking the footpath outside The Bagel Project Carrington Street forcing pedestrians into the road.

Stopped at Caphinique and had beef pho. Ok, not great. Not the quality of Viet 80 or the Japanese ramen noodle restaurant in Hockley top of the street from Effy.

Dumped Lime rental e-bikes outside Nottingham Railway Station and in Carrington Street. Why no action by Nottingham City Council? Impound, charge £250 recovery fee,£50 daily storage fee.

Nottingham very very cold. Weak hazy sun. No warmth from the sun.

Very crowded, Carrington Street and through … Garden. Masked up delivery riders causing a bloody nuisance. Illegals? Why no action by Police and Immigration? On-the-spot fines. Repeat offenders, hefty fine, seize and destroy their e-bikes. Illegals, detain and deport.

Vibe very busy. Very long wait for my iced matcha latte and another long wait for my espresso. Both were excellent.

Cloudy and misty. Very very cold.

Cappuccino at Effy not good.Stange taste.  Disappointing.

Picked up a baked goods from Effy. Unusual any left, but they said baked more this morning.

Hockley packed. Could barely move.

Looked in the new Italian coffee shop in Hockley, Bonincontro The Italian Coffee House. An espresso. Not good, but by the standard of poor quality Italian coffee, overoasted beans, at least drinkable. Picked up up a croissant.

Too late to return to Vibe.

Head to Nottingham Railway Station.

Queue to get through the barriers. Probably because they have closed the side entrance. Why oh why, park the train five minutes walk down the platform?

No WiFi on the train. No usb charging. At least the train not crowded.

Why does EMR hate passengers? Happy to take their money, but not to provide a service.

Bailgate Deli reopens

February 15, 2026

I am pleased to report Bailgate Deli has finally reopened. Reopened last week. Closed for nearly two months.

Sold and closed before Christmas. New owners.

A pity they did not keep people informed.
The lunchtime menu appears not to have changed.

Breakfast menu? I don’t know if this is new or not. Not seen before. But never been for breakfast. Hopefully not disgusting vegan fake sausages, fake bacon. No excuse for not plant based,or at least plant based. Beans on sourdough toast, mushrooms on sourdough toast, grilled tomatoes, hash brownies, pancakes.

Very limited deli stock, which is being run down.  Wellbeck sourdough bread and Momo kombucha.

Depressing poor quality coffee and matcha has not been ditched. No excuse for either, not when spoilt for choice excellent coffee roasteries, and it is possible to source quality matcha.

The only plant-based deli in Lincoln?

Bailgate is being dug up to replace the setts. Free one hour parking in the nearby car parks, but a hassle, have to use an app or make a phone call. Hopefully will then be pedestrianised. Increased footfall, longer dwell time, less air pollution. Win win for everyone.

Ziniz

February 12, 2026

From the outside, deceptive. Dark inside, only a few people, appeared to be a deserted bar.

Appearance can be deceptive.

I asked for an espresso martini, but how I wished it to be made. It was to be made with Kalua not good, but adhering to the original Dick  Bradsell recioe

My choice

  • 40ml vodka
  • 15ml Agave syrup
  • two shots of espresso

Shaken as though hate it.

20ml simple sugar syrup. Agave syrup is one and a half times sweeter, make an adjustment. Strictly speaking 12-13ml , but 15ml easier to measure.

The best vodka, which bumped up the price.

The accommodating barman did an excellent job. Would be even better with better coffee. Ideally Colombian.

I tried the coffee as espresso. Typical undrinkable, over roasted Italian coffee.

I learnt we were in an Italian restaurant, the owner Italian.

Far larger than appeared from the outside.

Stunning interior. Large seating area out the back. But not for winter.

I gave a few ideas from where to source better coffee. Try the Blending Room in Hull. Or the Italian coffee shop that has recently opened in Hockley in Nottingham.

Very helpful and pleasant staff.

I’ve not tried the food, was there for a coffee, then settled in a cocktail 🍸.  On writing, I learnt that Ziniz was listed by The Times as one of the top ten Italian restaurants in the country .

I did notice, for the pizza flour and tomatoes imported from Italy. Wood-fired pizza oven?

Maybe return one day and try the food.

Hollie’s Bar

February 12, 2026

A twee little bar cum coffee shop, Bawtry, not far from Doncaster.

Walked in, sat down, got up, walked out.

Why?

The coffee was poor quality coffee from 200 Degrees.

200 Degrees, regional coffee chain owned by Caffè Nero. Brazilian blend, 80% poor quality Brazilian Arabica, bulked out with 80% poor quality Vietnamese Robusta.

No excuse for buying crap coffee when spoilt for choice with excellent coffee roasteries.

Maybe try sourcing coffee from Blending Room in Hull.

Whitby’s fish restaurant

February 12, 2026

Whitby’s, possibly the best fish restaurant in the country. More than fish n chips.

Horrendous weather en route.  Very heavy rain, the roads awash with water. Raining for weeks. The risk was, trapped with rising flood water. Maybe not a sensible journey to make.

Starter unusual. Grilled king prawns with assumed to be garlic olive oil,  bread, chilli and maybe other spices. More what would expect in a Korean or Japanese restaurant. Very pleasantly presented.

Followed by haddock and chips. Not as good as last visit, but still good.

Dessert  apple  crumble with custard and cream. The crumble was crunchy, as the crumble should be be.

Pot of tea was not good. Over brewed Yorkshire tea. More suited to a building site or a greasy spoon cafe. But was in Yorkshire, maybe the norm.

On arrival five o’clock not busy.  On leaving at six forty was heaving

What was noticeable, the young ladies serving skinny , probably walking at least 10,000 steps a shift. Those pigging away, seriously obese.

Is social media bad for humanity?

February 9, 2026

In the beginning, before there was social media, the Internet and World Wide Web were a force for good. Like minded people could connect and communicate. By contrast, social media is a cesspit. Bombarded by garbage, manipulated by Big Tech.  Welcome to the enshittocene, enshittification of the Internet.

Big Tech manipulates what we see, drawing on our stolen personal data.

Apps apps everywhere.

Download an app to cross the Humber Bridge. Since its opening half a century ago, pay at a toll booth to cross the bridge. As of this week, require an app to pay the toll.

Bailgate setts relayed. Lincoln City Council offer one hour free parking. Need an app to obtain the one hour free parking.

An app in a coffee shop. Data of customers passed to a third party.

Apps exist to steal personal data.

AI social media’s evil sibling, gobbling up Capital with little return, unsustainable demand for water and energy, scraping intellectual property, music and the written word

Big Tech has become global monopolies that should be broken up.

  • Facebook stripped of WhatsApp and Instagram .
  • Google stripped of maps, Android, YouTube.

Network effect locks us into platforms where we have no choice.

Duolingo once useful , is now data mining users.

TikTok, sold to a Tech Bro Fascist, is now  demanding more personal data.

We need an open source open protocol alternative to Facebook. Network veffect, we are there because out friends are there.

Where alternatives exist, use them.

Boot & Shoe Flintham revisit

February 8, 2026

Sometimes I visit again, if I enjoyed my first visit. Sometimes a revisit, if bad, was the first visit an aberration? Or if it was good, is it consistently good?

On my last visit, it was raining, stopped when I arrived, but very wet.

On this visit,  it had been raining for days, if not weeks, widespread flooding en route to Flintham, especially around Newark.

Last visit, tomahawk pork chop. This visit, roast pork Sunday roast dinner.

Presentation when brought to the table, amazing. And it was not a false promise.

Tomahawk pork chop on my last visit was sourced from Redhill Farm. I did not ask, but I’m assuming, the pork from the same source.

A quick glance behind the bar, quality liquor. On the bar, an excellent selection of craft beer.

Vacated as we walked in, a table at the side of the log fire, by the window overlooking the street outside.

Excellent food, excellent staff and service, pleasant ambience.

On finishing my Sunday roast dinner, another glass of craft beer.

I was tempted by an espresso. But no, a second glass of craft beer.

How many pubs serve speciality coffee?

Kitchen closed. Roast potatoes were brought out. Anyone wish for? I declined, I was full. A nice gesture and a clever idea. If not eaten, try the roast potatoes, maybe return next week for Sunday roast dinner. And why waste good food?

Old bar at the front, pass through a restaurant, to a contemporary small room at the back with contemporary art on the walls.

In the near future, Boot & Shoe Flintham will be offering accommodation.

We hear constant whining from failing hospitality. Begging for government bailouts. But why should public money be used to bailout failing hospitality? Maybe try putting their own house in order.

Flintham is off the beaten track, roughly midday between Newark and Nottingham.

Vegan Market Cornhill

February 7, 2026

Lunchtime, pedestrians nearly run down, car illegally driving through crowded Sincil Street.

Walked through Lincoln Central Market. Very busy. Could see no reason why. Midweek dead.

River Witham running high, fast, muddy. Rain for days.

Lunch at Amazing Appetite.

Market stall in the High Street, noticed stalls in Cornhill.

I’d stumbled across a vegan market.

Quality street food, looked good. Better than the travelling junk food circus in the High Street. Better than the vegan festival a few years ago in the Drill Hall. Too cold though for street food .

A modified VW camper van, coffee truck. Poor quality 200 Degrees.  Seemed pointless, when in Sincil Street 200 Degrees coffee shop. Or for those of us who prefer specialty coffee, Coffee Aroma, Vestry Hall and Madam Waffle.

Vegan fake ‘cheese’. I did not try. It looked disgusting . Locally, The Cheese Society. Or take a trip to Nottingham and visit The Cheese Shop in Flying Horse Walk.

Apart from the coffee van and the fake cheese, could form the core of a street food festival in Castle Hill, not restricted to vegan. Empathise, street food, not disgusting junk food . And no longer invite the disgusting junk food traveling circus.

Later, cappuccino at Coffee Aroma.
