Buyer beware. Be wary of January Sales scams.

Wig & Mitre has a large A-board blocking the footpath top of Steep Hill. Not the only ones other businesses are also blocking the footpath. Action required by the local council.

25% off all meals. £1 off selected drinks.

Last year, all meals £10. It was a scam. Only on a selected few meals. And only a few pence cheaper.  I was wise enough to ask. What if I had not asked, and then billed full price?

The dish I ordered arrived too soon to be freshly prepared. Was of poor quality. A service to match.

The sign is insulting to those adhering to Dry January. Though why stick to January?  Alcohol  is damaging to health.

The offer though is pathetic and insulting. Venture down Steep Hill to the binge drinking bars at the top of the High Street. Half price drinks, half price food.

Once upon a time Wig & Mitre had a good reputation. Or so I am told by locals. Now owned by a failing pubco, and it shows.

The offers are a sign of desperation. The good places don’t need offers and gimmicks, aren’t whining for government bailouts.

Try the White Horse. Walk down Steep Hill. Turn right where The Strait meets the top of the  High Street. Excellent food, excellent selection of craft beer, excellent service.

Wig & Mitre for sale?

March 28, 2024

According to a Lincs Live scribbler, the Wig & Mitre a popular pub.

The last time I checked, twice, once for a drink with a friend another time to eat, the pub was empty, tables dirty, the food on a par with a greasy spoon cafe, only a greasy spoon cafe would have been cheaper and of better quality.

Was the manger pissed when they cobbled together the press release, as he seems to think the pub is located in Bailgate? It is not, it is on Steep Hill.

Had the scribbler bothered to do a little research, i.e. carried out real journalism , he would have learnt that RedCat, the pubco that owns the Wig & Mitre, has called in  administrators

. Then asked the question, is the Wig & Mitre for sale?

RedCat was established by the former head of Greene King, a pubco that relieves mugs of their life savings, then looks for the next mug.

If the Wig & Mitre is typical of pubs in the RedCat pubco chain, food even worse than J D  Wetherspoon, then no surprise has gone into administration.

There are far better places to eat in the vicinity of the Wig Mitre.  But then what to expect from a chain?

Lincoln very cold January afternoon

January 9, 2024

The last few days, after days of heavy rain, dry, but turned very cold, cold north wind, feels sub-zero.

River Witham downstream of Lincoln, widespread flooding. A large lake at Ferry lane in Washingborough.

In the city centre, River Witham has dropped significantly, but still fast flowing.

City centre deserted, but not as deserted as last week. Many businesses remain closed, but a few have opened since last week.

Strait and Narrow now open.

Bar Unico packed, no specials.

I decide to walk up Steep Hill, try the Wig & Mitre. The offers on the A”board outside blocking the footpath are a scam. Scampi and chips disgusting.

Murdeli, aborio rice, chocolate coated raisins from the zero waste shop in Bailgate.

Now very cold.

Cappuccino at Coffee Aroma. Not busy.

Wig & Mitre January Sales scam

January 9, 2024

I would have eaten at Bar Unico, but packed and no specials.

I decided to walk up Steep Hill and check out Wig & Mitre January Sale offers on their A-board blocking the footpath.

Somewhat confusing. One side of the A-board main courses £10, the other side selected lunch time offers £8.

When I last visited for a drink, empty, not today, busy, or at least had been busy, from the evidence of the dirty uncleared tables. It must be the lunch time offers enticing them in.

As I walked in, I noticed tables were dirty, had not been cleared of dirty dishes.

I waited at the bar whilst drinks were ordered. I then asked of the offers. Barman rattled off less than half a dozen items, muttered terms and conditions, then brought me a board that listed the very limited offer. He had obviously been briefed, should a potential customer question the scam.

A scam. Does not include everything on the main menu. I was also told get my order in, kitchen closed in ten minutes. Outside it said open all day. That evening I checked on-line, kitchen open all day.

Scam.very restricted offer. Steak? No. Bangers and mash on the main menu a little over ten pounds. The same was true of the lunch time offers, only a few pence more than the offer price.

At this point, once it was obvious it was a scam, I should have turned on my heels and walked out.

I was at the bar several minutes. Whilst there, I noticed the door to the kitchen was open, sitting there an order of fish and chips.

I asked for a table by the window to be cleared. I was directed to a table in the gloomy interior.

Barman cleared a table. Apologised. Said he was the only one on. Serving drinks, taking orders, serving tables, cleaning tables.

My order of scampi and chips arrived within minutes. Disgusting. On a par with a greasy spoon cafe, only a greasy spoon cafe would have been cheaper and better quality. Frozen peas, poor quality chips, very poor quality fake scampi. Served on a cold plate.

The restaurant was cold.

The WiFi was blocked by the security on my phone, not secure, an untrustworthy connection.

Flipping through the drinks menu, no cocktails. Maybe for the better, as most bars and restaurants are clueless on cocktails.

The only positive. A lovely old building.

A chain and it shows. Begs the question, is this January Sales scam running across the chain?

There are far better places to eat local to the Wig & Mitre

– Slow Rise

– Lawson’s Bistro

– White Horse

– The Cheese Society

– Olé Olé tapas restaurante

A formal complaint has been lodged with Trading Standards.

What would have happened if a group of people had sat down, ordered steak and chips, then when eaten, presented with a bill for the price on the menu, not as they expected, ten pounds each? I would have refused to pay. I was wise enough to question the offer before ordering, but not wise enough when the scam exposed to turn on my heels and walk out. Had I walked out, at least I would have been saved from the disgusting scampi and chips.

The start of the New Year has seen many pubs and restaurants close. With the abysmal low standards of the Wig & Mitre it is easy to see why. The only suprise is that they remain open for business.
