Doddington Hall farm shop

April 20, 2024

Last Saturday, a visit to Doddington Hall farm shop.

Impressive farm shop. I visited Henry’s a few weeks ago. I was not impressed.

Doddington Hall, high quality, but expensive.

The Busy Butcher

March 31, 2024

Local family butcher and farm shop in the centre of Horncastle.

I popped in early afternoon Easter Saturday.

Horncastle, a market town in Lincolnshire, where everyone does their shopping in the morning, then goes home. Afternoon, everything is closed or is starting to close.

The butcher was friendly and helpful.

I came away with, Lincolnshire sausages, minced beef, chicken and mushroom pie, roast beef and dark chocolate and ginger cookies.

I am always wary of pies, no telling what may be in them.  The chicken and mushroom pie was excellent, fan oven 150C for 30 minutes.

Uncle Henry’s farm shop

March 17, 2024

I came across Uncle Henry’s last year at the Lincoln Sausage Festival in the grounds of Lincoln Castle. Their sausages were used in a cooking demonstration and they had a stall. I was invited to visit the farm.

I don’t know what I was expecting. A shed selling farm produce. What I found was a very large complex, in the middle of nowhere.

I decided on a burger, then when ordering, changed my mind, seeing pork chop on the board, weekend only.

Person at the till surly and uncooperative. No waitress service. No,could not have toast. Check with kitchen. Then backed down. Water. Go and get it.

Ordering the pork chop was a mistake. Tough. The chips looked disgusting, were disgusting. The fat on the pork chop was tasty, indicating maybe organic, maybe free range. I left the pork chop half eaten. Saved to give to the fox.

The restaurant was like a supermarket cafe in Asda or Morrisons.

A pleasant sunny courtyard with outside seating.

In the shop, ham shrink wrapped in plastic.  Why? Why not carve or slice where the cheese was cut to order?

The lady manning the till for the fresh produce was friendly and helpful.

The narrow road leading to the farm shop, an idiot drove towards us too fast as we were leaving, forcing us off the road onto the waterlogged grass verge. There needs to be a prominently displayed 20mph speed limit.

If lived near Henry’s, then useful for fresh produce. An hour round trip from Lincoln, no. Not when have Pepperdine’s, Redhill Farm shop, Fresh from the Fields and a monthly farmers market.

Located roughly midway between Lincoln, Gainsborough and Scunthorpe

Smiths Little Farm Shop

August 15, 2023

A farm shop outside Boultham Park, only it ain’t, it’s at best a very poor fruit and vegetable shop.

A farm shop is fresh produce from the farm, only this is not.

Mushrooms fit for the compost heap, runner beans old and fried up.

Expensive.

Very disappointing.

A farm shop is Redhill Farm Shop in Bailgate, or for fruit and vegetables Fresh from the Fields behind Bailgate or the stall in the High Street in the city centre.
