Caphinique

February 16, 2026

A couple of weeks ago, too late for Vibe, was not going to make my train, I decided to stop off at Caphinique, a Vietnamese coffee.

It took so long to barely drip through, I nearly missed my train.

Saturday, I decided to have lunch at Caphinique.

I stopped at Caphinique and had beef pho. Ok, not great. Not the quality of Viet 80 or the Japanese ramen noodle restaurant in Hockley top of the street from Effy.

I learnt later from a Vietnamese friend, the food was not good. Her recommendation was for the coffee.

I learnt today from another Vietnamese friend,  Caphinique is Vietnamese for coffee.

The Bagel Project Carrington Street pig-ignorant customer

December 22, 2025

Alighting from the train,l at Nottingham Railway Station I  felt hungry.

I had intended, pop into The Bagel Project Carrington Street to  say hi to the barista, thank him for the excellent coffee in my last visit, wish him Merry Christmas, give him a mince pie, and be on my way. But I decided to stop and have a bagel, followed by a coffee.

Looked in the Bagel Project. Feeling hungry , I thought stay. The barista was not there, and I did not know his name.

I commented empty. Usually packed. The train to Nottingham was not busy.

I noted Cartwheel Coffee  Misspent Youth was still being served.  Asked for a poppy seeded bagel. Sorry only sesame seeds. Explains why on my last visit, I did not get a poppy seeded bagel. A pity, as their best  bagels. Cost cutting?

Sit by the shelf at the window? Can look out of the window. Last visit it was too cold. Changed my mind, popped my coat on a chaitr by a table by the counter, then stepped back to the counter.

A woman,  let’s say obese challenged, barged past me like a WWI tank. Then started to mouth off giving me lip, claimed I’d pushed in. Did she think I’d materialised out of the floor? I walked away. Futile arguing with a pig-ignorant moron. As a wise man once said, don’t argue with an idiot, bystsnderswill not know who is the idiot. Excellent advice.

She shouted at me to repeat what I said as I walked away. I said if she did not hear, I was not repeating myself. I then ignored her.

Next she’s complaing to any one who will listen. A man at a table got up to leave and said I should apologise.

Once in Oxford, a woman tried to rob me. Bystanders intervened, thinking I was attacking her. Until a man who was watching the scene unfold, shouted at them they were a bunch of idiots, she was trying to rob me. Maybe they were her associates. Two women ran away. One robs, hands to someone else. If detained, nothing in their possession. Thanks to the idiots or associates, she got away before I could take a picture

Manager speaks to me.  I suggest check your CCTV. On reflection I don’t recall any notice warning CCTV recording. A serious breach of data protection act, possible criminal offence.

I walked out. The atmosphere was not pleasant.

Feeling hungry, I decided to eat at The Bagel Project, a couple of minutes walk from Nottingham Railway Station, diagonally opposite 200 Degrees adjacent to the Nottingham Canal.

I caught the tail end of the lunchtime queue, then it went very quiet.

I ordered smoked salmon with cream cheese in a seeded bagel. Excellent.

I would have sat by the window, but it was cold.  Conveniently located 13A sockets, but no usb ports. I lacked a charger.

I noticed the coffee had changed. It was their own blend from Outpost Coffee. Now a blend from Cartwheel Coffee. I was the only one who had noticed.  I ordered a cappuccino.

Toilets clean.

The Bagel Project Carrington Street

March 13, 2025

Located in Carrington Street, outside Nottingham Railway Station, beside Nottingham Canal, diagonally opposite 200 Degrees.

This was Økende. I was sorry to see them booted out, excellent coffee.

Months of renovations, open date repeatedly set back. They opened a few weeks ago, I looked in Friday of last week, the first time I’ve passed by and found them to be open.

I was surprised to find it was packed.

Coffee from Outpost Coffee, top end espresso machine. But do they have a competent barista? I did not stop for a coffee. If I wanted Outpost Coffee, I would head to Hockley, to Cosmos or Despatch. I was headed to nearby Vibe.

I did not take a bagel, too early, I was headed to The Bagel Project in Hockley later, and the queue was too long, but had I ordered it would have been a poppy-seeded bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

The place was heaving, a queue to the door.

The interior and decor a vast improvement on Hockley, which is scruffy, tables always dirty, though I did notice dirty tables at the new venue.

Hockley venue should be closed, gutted, and brought up to the standard of Carrington Street.

I did later visit Hockley. Yob outside with feet on chairs, people who were not eating occupying tables. No poppy-seeded bagels, no smoked salmon. I walked across the street to the Ugly Bread Bakery, where I had excellent lunch. Their loss, my gain.

Økende Carrington Street CLOSED

July 13, 2024

Shocked and saddened to find Økende CLOSED.

I wondered why Økende was not part of the Notts Coffee Crawl. I learnt why when I found CLOSED and a Forfeiture Notice on the window  and door. It looked like the landlord had seized the property and changed the locks. Coffee was  sitting on the shelves. I did not look to see if expensive coffee gear was there.

I hope the owner had placed in a limited company, seperate to Økende West Bridgegird.

A sad loss to the coffee scene in Nottingham.

Not been open many months. They had plans to extend to the rear with seating, to open a bakery in the cellar.

When I visited, there was a steady stream of customers, buying coffee, beans, sandwiches, baked goods, and bread.

We have now lost two excellent coffee shops in Nottingham, Økende and before that Cartwheel Coffee.

Why? Extortionate rents, high business rates, the hated BID Levy?

These properties will sit empty. Greedy landlords are blighting our city centres. BIDs are killing struggling local businesses.
