The Mindful Mug

April 16, 2025

I learnt a new coffee shop had opened or at least had changed hands. Only a short detour, I decided to check it out.

When you have a board outside, Lincoln Tea and Coffee, doomed to fail. Very poor quality coffee.

The interior has not changed from the previous coffee shop, which is good, the clutter in the corner is not so good.

They had a launch party last Saturday, a poster advertised kopi luwak.

Kopi luwak is a vile trade in animal cruelty. Civet cats, shy nocturnal creatures that live in forests, are kept in battery cages, force fed with coffee beans, for the sick pleasure of brain-dead Australian tourists to take selfies.

No reputable coffee shop would be supporting this vile trade in animal cruelty. Any that do, are a disgrace to the industry.

No coffee shop should be supporting this vile trade in animal cruelty. Not only supporting, actively promoting on social media

Where they are getting the beans from, who is the supplier? I do not know, as I walked out in disgust. The supplier should be shut down.

Drift no 9 Bali edition has an excellent account of the vile Kopi Luwak trade.

Please do not buy kopi luwak. To do so is to support a vile trade in animal cruelty.

Two businesses in this location have already closed. It is easy to see why, lack of footfall. Would only survive if serving excellent coffee, top class equipment, a competent barista, worth going out of the way for a coffee.

St Martin’s Square, top of the High Street, turn left, supports a small foodie cluster. The Cheese Society, Slow Rise and the White Horse. For excellent coffee, try the White Horse.

In the town, three excellent coffee shops, Madame Waffle,  Coffee Aroma, Vestry Hall. Uphill, Seven Districts Bailgate and Stokes at the Lawn.

Apart from kopi luwak is a vile trade in animal cruelty, it is not quality coffee.  Nor is it the most expensive or the rarest.
