Sheffield mild mid-November 2025

November 13, 2025

Seasonal weather, warmer than average, maybe the new norm.

Northern Trains not too crowded. Topped up power banks, though did not need to use later.

Walked up to South Street Kitchen. Lunch excellent. Coffee was not good.

Excellent espresso at Mow’s. Wide choice of guest coffee. Several roasteries I’m not familiar with. Stunning ceramic pour over from Copenhagen I’ve never seen before. The design looks Japanese. Together with matching carafe expensive, over £100. Also good selection of books and journals on display.

Made Steam Yard before it closed at four.

Retraced my steps to Leah’s Yard. Overwhelmed by kerosene fumes. Picked up Solo, a coffee journal, from the bookshop. Sourdough loaf from the deli. Chocolate from Bullion Chocolate Bar. Busy. People on laptops. Maybe only place to go when coffee shops are closed.

Looked in Cambridge Street Collective. Korean kitchen, kimchi pancake? No. A box of poor quality chips waiting for a customer. Symptomatic of how far Cambridge Street Collective has gone downhill.

Train from Sheffield crowded. Not too crowded. Empty after Workshop.

Appalling EMR staff Lincoln Central

January 16, 2025

Chaos on the railways. Once again, many trains cancelled at Sheffield.

1738 cancelled. Try 1938 . Cancelled.

Try 2011 via Doncaster. A little after 2000, catch an earlier train running very very late.

Baffled, Pennine Express to Grimsby and Cleethorpes via Doncaster.

Arrive Lincoln Central …

At Sheffield, told ask for a taxi. Taxi requested. Told I’d receive a text message from taxi company to confirm .

No confirmation received. I returned to the station, asked for a taxi to pick me.

Woman refused to change the time.

I caught a taxi outside.

I later called the taxi company used by the taxi as a matter of courtesy, would no longer require a taxi.

They thanked me, then added, something odd her, could you bear with us. The taxi from the station was not ordered until 2214, which explains why no confirmation text. The woman who refused to change the time of the taxi had lied. Not taxi had been booked.

Northern Trains appalling service

May 27, 2024

Saturday, 1121 Northern Trains Lincoln to Sheffield.

On leaving Lincoln, the train was already crowded. More passengers piled on at Saxilby, Gainsborough and Retford.

Worksop the platform was heaving, cans and drinks in hand. It was a wonder no one ended up under the train.

Swigging from their cans and bottles, they somehow managed to pile onto the train.

The train was now dangerously overcrowded. Did not stop at scheduled stops into Sheffield, due to the train being dangerously overcrowded.

Return journey, 1738 cancelled. One of many trains shown cancelled. The next train 1840, which meant a taxi, as there were no buses.

1840 was crowded, but not as bad as I expected, considering the previous train had been cancelled.

The train emptied at Worksop.

At Gainsborough, more piled on, many the worse for drinking.

The train, two coaches. There should be at least three coaches. Alcohol should not be permitted on the train
