Flying Tiger power banks

Thinking of buying a power bank from Flying Tiger? Think again. Overpriced old stock.

Flying Tiger is an overpriced pound shop.  Mainly overpriced tat.

Flying Tiger treats customers with contempt. Forced to walk like rats through a maze.

Global warming? Winter, sub-zero, snow on the ground, double doors propped wide open.

The power banks are old stock. At least two years old. Have been on the shelves for at least two years. Old usb B ports, not usb C.

4000 mA power bank, fully charged. A couple of days later, had already dropped by one bar.

Solar powered 8000 mAh power bank. Mid-summer, will charge in ten days, if lucky. Gets red hot in the sun, probably shuts down. From Autumn to Spring, does not charge.

Lithium-ion batteries have a life of two years. After two years start to die. If have a smartphone older than two years, have a choice, new phone, replace battery, or carry a power bank if out all day and using the phone all day. A power bank becomes essential if the phone is older that two years and the phone battery dies whilst out.

If the power bank is old, then useless, not fit for purpose. But apart from the inconvenience, dangerous. It could explode, burst into flames.

Flying Tiger is knowingly selling old stock, not fit for purpose. Refusing to exchange or give a refund.

Flying Tiger is an example of why town centres are failing, turning into ghost towns, and why people are buying on-line from Amazon. With Amazon, no quibble replacement of faulty goods.

Flying Tiger, where quality does not count, where customer service is an alien concept. The company does not care, the retail staff don’t care.

Update: An implicit admission old stock, selling off at a fiver. A bargain? Not really. How long before they die? Risk of explosion and fire.

Eight ways to eat better in 2026

January 2, 2026

Diet is the most powerful tool you have for your health. — Sarah Berry

Does eating healthily make a difference, being mindful of what we eat?

It’s that time of Year , New Year Resolutions , Stop Smoking, Lose Weight, Veganuary. By the end of the week, most have fallen by the wayside.

I’ve never made New Year Resolutions. It has always seemed to me a pointless exercise. If I want to do something I do it.

There is though a psychological reason for starting on the first of the month.  A fresh start, a new beginning. So what better way to start then the First of January with a New Year Resolution. A New Year, a fresh start?

One possibility. Three fermented foods a day. This is based on a Stanford study, five fermented foods a day. Zoe replicated the study with 5000 volunteers,  three fermented foods a day. Both studies showed marked improvement in health. I tried last year. No noticeable improvement.

A discussion between Tim Spector, Sarah Berry  and Jonathan Wolf, eight ways we can improve our health by eating better in the New Year.

Counting calories is not the way to lose weight. Yo-yo diets.

We are not short of protein. Ignore the protein scams. Multi-billion dollar scam. The average person on a varied diet eats more than sufficient protein. Additional protein is not stored. It passes through or is converted to sugars and fat.

Positive changes to our diet lead to improvements in how we feel within days.

principles

  • mindful eating
  • eat 30 plants a week
  • avoid ultra-processed food
  • focus on food quality not calorie counting
  • when you eat
  • eat the rainbow
  • protein quality
  • eat fermented foods at least three a day

There are simple things we can do to improve our diet, improve our health.

Eat 30 plants a week. Five a Day is dated. Diversity of what we eat is important.

Eat the rainbow.

Eat three different fermented foods a day.

The three Ks, kimchi, krauts, kefir.

Avoid ultra-processed foods. Always read the labels.

Enshittification and the Rot Economy

January 1, 2026

One day I woke up and Google sucked. — Whitney Beltrán

Cory Doctorow and Ed Zitron in conversation with Whitney Beltrán.

Google search has gotten worse. Think about it. In the past, you may not have got it right, what you were looking for, but Google would second guess. Now you may have to refine your search a couple of times to find what you are looking for. This gives Google more opportunities to project into your brain crap you don’t want.

Lack of regulation, lax enforcement of antitrust, allows this to happen.

Google has only designed one successful product. Google search. Everything else, YouTube, maps, Android, Google has acquired.

Lack of competition and regulation, allows Google to build up a war chest. This can be used to acquire or crush completion.

Type in the search box on any Apple device, that search will take you to Google. Google pays Apple over $20 billion a year to direct the search to Google. Competition? What competition?

Marc Zuckerberg dare not walk among us. Someone might be sizing him up for a pitch fork.

Zuckerberg rarely appears on a public platform. Easy to see who. When he does he comes across as a creep and a moron. He is now throwing billions at AI.

Growth at all cost. Remove regulations.

AI draining water where it is most neededwww.bloomberg.com/graphics/202…#AI #water

Keith Parkins (@keithpp.bsky.social) 2026-01-02T18:24:05.929Z

AI is resource intensive. Unsustainable demand for water and energy. Gobbing up Capital with no foreseeable return on investment. Scraping copyright material, music and the written word.

What can we do to disrupt AI and the Rot Economy?

Stop any data centres near you. They will deplete water resources.

Deprive Facebook of the oxygen of personal data. Delete all personal data, but first overwrite with fake data, then delete a few days later. Never tag friends. Never games, quiz or survey. You are valuable to Facebook. your dta, your connections.

Move to other platforms. Transfer from X to bluesky. but retain your existing account to stop your ID being stolen.

We need an open source alternative to Facebook, agreed protocols to communicate across platforms. We and our friends can then relocate en masse from Facebook. The network effect in reverse.

Big Tech must be broken up. Google stripped of Youtube, Google Maps and Android. Facebook stripped of WhatsApp and Instagram.

It’s not if the AI bubble will burst, it’s when. Towards the end of last year, either Wall Street Journal or Bloomberg published a flow chart. In the centre Nvidia, around the periphery Big Tech . Money flows from Big Tech to Nvidia  Money flows from Nvidia to Big Tech.

  • Empire of AI – Karen Hao
  • Careless People – Sarah Wynn-Williams
  • Mindfucked – Christopher Wylie

Ask an AI chatbot a question, it sends a request to a data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: water. AI data centres are being built in water-stressed places. AI is not sustainable. High demand for water and energy. bloom.bg/4pZaqjm #AI #water

Waterstones coffee shop and bookshop

January 1, 2026

New Year’s Eve, everywhere closed early or not open. I thus ended up in Waterstones coffee shop in Lincoln High Street, not by choice.

I occasionally visit the coffee shop. The coffee is not good, it should be better, it is Union, unless they supply catering supply coffee.

I asked , when is the book shop closing? Five-thirty.  Coffee shop in about fifteen minutes.

Cappuccino please. In a takeaway cup? No. Ceramic or glass, never in a takeaway cup. Chocolate? No.

I added a mint tiffin to my order.

Neither were good. Waterstones are not doing Union any favours.

This coffee shop is always busy. Why, I do not know, as neither the coffee nor the cakes are good.

There are far better, independent coffee shops in Lincoln, serving specialty coffee.

  • Coffee Aroma
  • Madame Waffle
  • Vestry Hall

All within a couple of minutes of each other and of Waterstones.

On my way in, two excellent books on the shelves, which I highly recommend.

I picked up a book to flip through.

  • Padella –  Tim Sidatan

I can’t afford it, but I’m sorely tempted. Pasta.

Zombie sweeping the floor. Staff member wearing headphones.

I’m then asked to move, relocate to the second floor where I will find a table. I take a look. Find a table. Unable to use, taken up with paraphernalia.  I return to find the cafe in darkness. Appalling customer service.
