Bar Hackery sourdough bread

December 27, 2025

En route from The Perky Peacock to coffee shops in Fossgate a detour to Bar Hackery, an excellent bakery in Mickelgate, to buy sourdough bread. Also, I don’t know what it is called, maybe a knot with pistachio in the middle.

I learnt they now have four shops, including a coffee shop in the centre of York.

Partisan bench fiasco

April 3, 2025

Walking around the City Walls from York Railway Station, I was looking forward to sitting outside Partisan on a warm sunny day relaxing with a coffee.

Where had the bench seat gone? A worthless Jobsworth had ordered its removal. Why? It cannot be classed as outdoor seating, not blocking the street. Further down the street, large A-boards blocking the footpath, fenced off seating blocking the footpath.

The very least Partisan deserves an explanation, and provided with a copy of the rules.

I’ve never anywhere come across a business ordered to remove a bench or told they need a pavement licence. it was not in any way obstructing the public footpath.

Is this how York City Council supports local businesses?

There is very little traffic in Mickelgate. Why is it not pedestrianised? Or the very least, a low traffic neighbourhood?

Partisan

March 26, 2025

A little coffee shop cum restaurant in Mickelgate in York.

Cellar dim, claustrophobic, hot, ground level, too noisy. Most of the dishes are egg based. Tapestries on the walls,

I did not stop and eat. Instead, a coffee on the bench seat outside. Pleasant in a warm sunny spring afternoon.

The roaster Murmuration  in Brighton. I’d not heard of.

The croissants looked enticing. I regret I did not pick one up to eat later.

Mickelgate

March 26, 2025

Micklegate is a street in the City of York. The name means “Great Street”, “gate” coming from the Old Norse gata, or street.

Nikolaus Pevsner described Micklegate as without any doubt the most architecturally rewarding street in York.

A pleasant street, lined with coffee shops, restaurants, bookshops, a bakery, and unlike the narrow streets in the environs of York Minister,

Mickelgate Bar, a gate in the city walls to enter the city.

Very little traffic in the street. Why not make pedestrianised or a low traffic neighbourhood?

Divine coffee shop Micklegate

March 7, 2025

On a visit to York on Thursday I decided to visit a couple of coffee shops I’d not visited before. One of these Divine was about ten minutes out of my way in Micklegate. It was not worth the detour.

Pleasant decor , books by James Hoffmann and Dhan Tamang on a shelf behind the bar, for show not for customers to browse.

A row of syrups at the front of the bar, not a good sign.

Girl serving coffee clueless. Argued that it is not a cappuccino if does not have chocolate on top. Wrong. Embarrassing.

Bags of coffee on shelves. No roast date, no price. Best by date is meaningless. I would have asked of the price and roast date, but the girl behind the bar was too busy chatting on  her phone.

The only plus of visiting Divine was that I passed an excellent bakery,  Bar Hashery, en route,  which I then retraced my steps to. The bakery sourced excellent coffee from Origin.

On leaving Divine, a visit to Kiosk in Fossgate, the place for coffee in York.

On leaving York,  I passed Divine next to a Costa.
