Enshittification and the Rot Economy

January 1, 2026

One day I woke up and Google sucked. — Whitney Beltrán

Cory Doctorow and Ed Zitron in conversation with Whitney Beltrán.

Google search has gotten worse. Think about it. In the past, you may not have got it right, what you were looking for, but Google would second guess. Now you may have to refine your search a couple of times to find what you are looking for. This gives Google more opportunities to project into your brain crap you don’t want.

Lack of regulation, lax enforcement of antitrust, allows this to happen.

Google has only designed one successful product. Google search. Everything else, YouTube, maps, Android, Google has acquired.

Lack of competition and regulation, allows Google to build up a war chest. This can be used to acquire or crush completion.

Type in the search box on any Apple device, that search will take you to Google. Google pays Apple over $20 billion a year to direct the search to Google. Competition? What competition?

Marc Zuckerberg dare not walk among us. Someone might be sizing him up for a pitch fork.

Zuckerberg rarely appears on a public platform. Easy to see who. When he does he comes across as a creep and a moron. He is now throwing billions at AI.

Growth at all cost. Remove regulations.

AI is resource intensive. Unsustainable demand for water and energy. Gobbing up Capital with no foreseeable return on investment. Scraping copyright material, music and the written word.

What can we do to disrupt AI and the Rot Economy?

Stop any data centres near you. They will deplete water resources.

Deprive Facebook of the oxygen of personal data. Delete all personal data, but first overwrite with fake data, then delete a few days later. Never tag friends. Never games, quiz or survey. You are valuable to Facebook. your dta, your connections.

Move to other platforms. Transfer from X to bluesky. but retain your existing account to stop your ID being stolen.

We need an open source alternative to Facebook, agreed protocols to communicate across platforms. We and our friends can then relocate en masse from Facebook. The network effect in reverse.

Big Tech must be broken up. Google stripped of Youtube, Google Maps and Android. Facebook stripped of WhatsApp and Instagram.

It’s not if the AI bubble will burst, it’s when. Towards the end of last year, either Wall Street Journal or Bloomberg published a flow chart. In the centre Nvidia, around the periphery Big Tech . Money flows from Big Tech to Nvidia  Money flows from Nvidia to Big Tech.

  • Empire of AI – Karen Hao
  • Careless People – Sarah Wynn-Williams
  • Mindfucked – Christopher Wylie

Ask an AI chatbot a question, it sends a request to a data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: water. AI data centres are being built in water-stressed places. AI is not sustainable. High demand for water and energy. bloom.bg/4pZaqjm #AI #water
