Dinner at Vangelis

October 13, 2015

Last night, dinner at Vangelis.

Excellent tomato soup. Different to last time, no added potato. A big improvement.

Huge pork chop, and this  was small.  Succulent and tasty.

Greek salad. Not as good as Nicolas Tavern, but still good.

To drink water and a local beer from a microbrewery.

Complimentary sweet, a small cake.

I was later than usual. Before nine noise not too bad from rough bar Bell’s. After nine noisy and later very unpleasant. Loud moronic music, moronic DJ in love with his own voice shouting, drunks screaming and shouting. I would have sat in the garden out the back, but others had had the same idea.

There are two excellent traditional Greek-Cypriot tavernas in Protaras, Nicolas Tavern and Vangelis Taverna.

Vangelis Taverna is s long established family business. This summer first year in Protaras for the summer season. In a couple of weeks they will close and return to Paralimni.

Excellent mushroom soup.

Most places serve a roll, maybe a slice of bread, some even charge as extra. In Vangelis, a loaf of bread in a wooden box, covered with a cloth. Butter mixed with garlic, herbs and dried tomatoes.

King prawns, served with grilled vegetables and chips. A mistake on my part, as I did not enjoy the king prawns.

I did not have to order a dessert. I was served  a dessert without asking.

Vangelis opened this year in Protaras. Vangelis are a long established fifth generation business, established in Paralimni in 1948.

Vangelis

Tomato soup, served with a small loaf. The loaf in a wooden box, covered with a cloth. A more sophisticated version of garlic butter, with herbs and dried tomato.

Followed by pork chop, grilled vegetables and chips. Although not requested, a bowl of salad.

I thought the pork chop was large at No 1 last week, but it was dwarfed by this pork chop. And it was of far superior quality. I had asked for a small pork chop.

Followed by a sweet, though I had not requested.

I sat at the side, overlooking the street.

The noise from Bell’s across the stret, especially the moronic DJ, not pleasant.

Not busy, few people passing in the street. The sunbeds are empty, and yet, the hotels are full.

I did not appreciate how large Vangelis, until I went inside to pay the bill. And there was seating out the back (far nicer than the front).

Vangelis is a long established family business, though only recently opened in Protaras. The obvious comparison is with Nicolas Tavern. Both serve Greek-Cypriot cuisine,  the emphasis on quality.

Vangelis: A message of hope

Beauty is harmony which comes from chaos. — Vangelis

We invest in chaos because chaos is much more profitable. — Vangelis

Fascinating thoughts of Vangelis, music corporations destroying music, destroying creativity.

Ithaca

March 25, 2013

As you set out for Ithaca
hope that your journey is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon-don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare sensasion
touches your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon-you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope that your journey is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind-
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and learn again from those who know.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so that you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaca to make you rich.
Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would have not set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaca won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithacas mean.

Ithaca by Cavafy, read by Sean Connery, music by Vangelis.

Mythodea – Vangelis

March 24, 2013

This concert by Vangelis in Athens, in sight of the Acropolis in the stunning setting of the Temple of Zeus, was for the Nasa Mars mission of 2001.

Blade Runner

June 8, 2012

I was hoping to find the film Blade Runner, instead found music by Vangelis with clips from the film Blade Runner.

I remember a friend inviting me round to watch this film some time in the 1980s. Directed by Ridley Scott, based on Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep? by Philip K Dick, a very chilling and disturbing portrayal of the future into which we are sleepwalking.

Vangelis – Mythodea

Mythodea, a live concert by Vangelis in Athens. The music was written for a Nasa Mars mission.

Perfomed at the Temple of Zeus in Athens Hellas.

If you have never seen this concert it is an absolute must.
