Too pissed to run his own pub

Councillor Bruce Thomas runs La Fontaine

Councillor Bruce Thomas runs La Fontaine

La Fontaine has been raided eleven times by council officials, at times also accomanied by police and councillors.

They have found illegal after-hours drinking, illegal on-premises smoking, illegal out-of-hours music.

They would have liked to have questioned the pub landlord Councillor Bruce Thomas, only found he was too intoxicated to answer questions.

Not the behaviour to be expected from a pub landlord, not the behaviour to be expected from a local councillor.

This therefore begs the questions: Why has the pub not been closed, why has the licence to run a pub not been revoked? Why is he still a local councillor?

To run a pub, it is necessary to show fit and proper person.

According to the local comic:

In documents handed to the council, PC Iain Barnes said the La Fontaine was in breach of two of the council’s four licensing objectives – prevention of crime and disorder and prevention of public nuisance.

PC Barnes first visited the pub during the early hours of August 20, 2011, with RBC licensing officer Sue Berry.

They found the front door locked but could see through the window people at the bar and the pub’s disco lights on.

Entering, PC Barnes and Mrs Berry heard people talking about ‘hiding ash trays’ and they could see and smell smoke. They were led to the kitchen where PC Barnes challenged Cllr Thomas about people smoking on the premises, which Cllr Thomas denied.

Further visits by RBC found other breaches of the pub’s 2005 licence, including recorded music being played after hours, people being re-admitted after midnight and patrons drinking outside in areas not covered by the pub’s licence.

The pub’s licence requires it to ensure customers vacate external drinking areas by 10pm and to stop recorded music at 11pm.

PC Barnes found the level of intoxication witnessed during his two most recent visits suggested alcohol was not being sold in a responsible way and people were being served ‘beyond the point of drunkenness’. And that the conduct of Bruce Thomas  painted an unprofessional image and demonstrated an inability to maintain ‘satisfactory control’ of his establishment and customers.

During the planning meeting to discuss the destruction of The Tumbledown Dick, Councillor Bruce Thomas fell over backwards to put the boot in. No vested interest was declared. When later that evening he dared to show his face at the Tilly Shilling, he was asked to justify his deplorable behaviour. He claimed he did not know what was going on and had to vote how he was told to vote by council officials.

Tory Out of Touch local election leaflet: main aim as your councillor will be to ensure that our town centre develops in a way which serves all residents’ interests and preserve the unique historic character of Farnborough

Out of Touch May election leaflet put out by Tories in Empress Ward in Farnborough, the ward that encompasses the town centre:

“A main aim as your councillor will be to ensure that our town centre develops in a way which serves all residents’ interests and preserve the unique historic character of Farnborough. I will work hard to make sure that the new cinema and eateries are suitable and family friendly and that local shops and small businesses are helped to survive and thrive.

I believe that our green spaces such as Cove Green, Queen Elizabeth Park and the Abbey fields are vital facilities and should be preserved.

Most importantly I will hold the council to account to make sure that it is well run, responds to residents and spends our money wisely – serving local interests and responsibly getting on with the job.”

There is a box that contains the following:

“Our History Matters
A major issue that I pursue is the protection of the unique historic character of the ward.
Within Farnborough, the greater part of the town’s historic culture exists within the Empress ward and I am greatly concerned that there is not any further loss.
LET US PROTECT EMPRESS’ IDENTITY”

It is one thing to take the electorate for granted, quite another to insult their intelligence.

This is the reality:

  • Farnborough town centre trashed
  • £1 million squandered on repaving Queensmead
  • local tax payer financed free wifi scam for Queensmead to steal and abuse personal data
  • public money invested in a commercial cinema in Farnborough
  • protective covenant for Firgrove Green sold for a pittance
  • trees on Firgrove Green, a little woodland glade, cut down
  • Firgrove Parade to be destroyed, destroying four local businesses
  • secret meeting with the Fat Clown to stitch up the local community and destroy The Tumbledown Dick
  • c 1720s Tumbledown Dick destroyed for a Drive-Thru McDonald’s
  • gloating over the destruction of The Tumbledown Dick
  • opposition to dedicating the green space by Farnborough Library as Village Green to protect from greedy developers
  • blocking Fran Beauchamp receiving a local community award

The three Empress councillors, together with the local member of parliament, met with the Fat Clown to stitch up a dirty little deal behind the backs of the local community to destroy The Tumbledown Dick for a Drive-Thru McDonald’s.

The local community requested a meeting with their elected representatives. It was refused!

Two of the ward councillors who held the secret meeting with the Fat Clown, rubber-stamped plans to demolish c 1720s Tumbledown Dick. The third ward councillor who was at the secret meeting with McDonald’s, when he heard the plans to destroy The Tumbledown Dick had been rubber-stamped, gloated in his blog he was lovin it.

Local heritage is not protected by demolishing it. The Tumbledown Dick was one of the oldest building in Farnborough, it pre-dates Farnborough, an old coaching inn on the tracks crossing the desolate moor. It was not protected by demolishing for for a Drive-Thru McDonald’s.

The Ham & Blackbird is earmarked for demolition for two blocks of flats.

The Courthouse at risk of having its character ruined by demolition of its chimneys and removal of the front porch.

The Imperial Arms is at risk of demolition for a block of flats.

Where is the protection of these three buildings? Are they locally listed? Why is there no pub protection policy in place?

The Tumbledown Dick was listed as a building of local historical importance. It was listed as an Asset of Community Value. All counted for nought when a greedy developer wanted to demolish for a Drive-Thru McDonald’s. The planners in the pocket of developers told the councillors how to vote and the councillors rubber-stamped what was put before them. Two fingers to health, two fingers to the local community, two fingers to local heritage.

A restrictive covenant to protect Firgrove Green was sold for a pittance. Plans to destroy Firgrove Green and Firgrove Parade, in the process destroying four local businesses, rubber stamped, the local businesses told to go elsewhere.

The local community, seeing green space at Firgrove Green destroyed, and wishing to see the remaining green space protected from greedy developers, have pushed for the remaining green space in the town centre, that between the Library, the derelict Police Station, the Community Centre, the Sports Centre, designated as an official Village Green. The council is opposing the designation.

Wasting a million pound on re-paving Queensmead, such a shoddy job was done that it now floods each and every time it rains, is not spending money wisely. Nor is spending public money on a free wifi scam to steal and abuse personal data.

The eateries by the cinema will be tacky chain eateries as we see at Wastegate in Aldershot. No understanding of how local economies work. Each tenner spent will be a tenner drained out of the local economy.

The town centre has been trashed. It is a place people make a concious decision to avoid. Those with the means go elsewhere. Pound shops, betting shops, and soon a bingo hall. Welcome to Chavsville, or Ferburger, as it is now known.

Small retailers, local businesses, are not helped to thrive and survive, by demolishing them, by telling them to go elsewhere, as is happening at Firgrove Parade.

A local community award for Fran Beauchamp was sabotaged by two councillors with a vested interest, behind closed doors. They sure do love their secret meetings. It would not do to let the local community see what they get up to.

The Out of Touch leaflet doesn’t take the local electorate for granted, it insults their intelligence, and once again shows contempt for the local community.

Maybe it is thought local people do not see what is happening, a town centre trashed, trees cut down, Tumbledown Dick demolished.

If there is no wish to act for the local community, to enhance the quality of life, then why stand for election? Oh yes, over £280,000 claimed in allowances and expenses.

Local councillors go on an outing

local councillors on an outing

local councillors on an outing

Now you see them, now you don’t. Local councillors accompanied by their local member of parliament go on an outing to see what the locality they allegedly represents looks like.

Yes, folks, it is that time of year, you do not see them all you year round, then come May local elections, it is like an infestation of cockroaches.

People fought hard for the right to vote. A vote should never be handed over lightly. Let us take a look at their track record.

  • Wastegate laying waste to Aldershot
  • a weekend international market selling tat
  • Aldershot town centre dominated by fast food joints and crack gambling dens
  • collecting over £280,000 in expenses and allowances

Think wisely before you cast your vote. Do you really want more of the same?

I am sure they will love to hear your thoughts on the aroggant contempt they show the local community, their failure to heed the wishes of the local community, their failure to scrutinise what is put before them.
