Stepping into Nineteen Eighty-Four

June 2, 2017

Last Friday, it was as though I had stepped into Nineteen-Eighty Four.

I had flown into the country a few hours earlier. From outside the country, I was asked was England under Martial Law?

The country on highest terrorist alert following Manchester bombing. Armed soldiers patrolling the streets.

At Gatwick, having spent the night there, around 4-30am, a poor quality coffee and cookie at Jamie Oliver, my phone dead, I moved a few feet to a shelf to charge my phone. Two armed police appeared at my side armed with semi-automatic weapons, plus a dog. I apologised and let them know it was my luggage. They thanked me for letting them know and moved on.

Disgusting English breakfast in a  deserted Wetherspoon. Deserted bar two gangs of loud-mouthed drunken yobs, putting down pints at five in the morning.

Begs the question, why serve alcohol at airports or on flights, as only causes problems on the plane?

Undrinkable coffee at Joes Coffee House, though the porridge was ok. I was only there because an idiot at Gatwick directed me to wrong platform.

Late night and early hours of the morning at Gatwick, few trains running, none to Reading, none to Victoria, due to overnight rail works for the foreseeable future. This in addition to weekend rail works that have been ongoing for the last decade.

Late morning, train to Gatwick. Tannoy warning beware, slogans, report anything suspicious. Same on the train. Plus scrolling messages.

The train was all but empty. Now this was unusual, highly unusual. Gatwick train usually packed on a Friday, as was today. And this was a Bank Holiday Weekend, start of school half term.

Guildford Station. It was eerie, the station all but deserted.

In Guildford, the town deserted.

What was going on? Had the propaganda got to people, were they too scared to go out?

North Street, market day, no one around.

Thai restaurant in Jeffries Passage, all but empty, though that not uncommon. Food good, service surly.

Harris + Hoole, not busy.  Cappuccino and cookie excellent.

Telling the truth is a revolutionary act

January 22, 2017

In an age of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act. — George Orwell

The Party told you to reject all evidence with your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. — George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four

The point is that the attacks and the attempts to delegitimize this president in one day — and we’re not going to sit around and take it.  – Reince Priebus, White House Chief of Staff

The method for taking over the state and for it becoming a totalitarian police state, is always the same, and it’s always the identification of ‘the other’ as the enemy. In Trump’s case, it’s the Chinese, the Mexicans, and Islam – it doesn’t matter who it is. With Hitler, it was the Jews, the Communists, the Gypsies, anybody who had a physical deformity, or whatever it might be, the homosexuals – they were all lumped together. — Roger Waters

The resistance begins today. — Roger Waters

In Nineteen Eighty-Four, war is peace.

On Inauguration Day, the crowds in Washington were far fewer than for the Inauguration of Barack Obama. The anti-Trump protest, Women’s March, the next day, dwarfed that for the Trump Inauguration.

Estimates of the Women’s March put it at three times for the Trump Inauguration.  The Metro reported it carried three times as many passengers on Saturday as on Friday.

In cities across America, massive anti-Trump demonstrations.  No only in USA, across the world. There was a massive demonstration in Sydney.

But no, according to Trump the media was lying.

If Trump lies on the size of a  crowd, can we believe him on anything he says?

His White House press mouthpiece repeated the lie.  Repeated the lie and launched an unprecedented attack on the media.

When White House chief of staff threatens the media, says will not tolerate media questioning  legitimacy of the Trump presidency, this has shades of Nazi Germany.

What is he going to do, lockup up journalists as they do in Turkey, kill journalists as in  Russia?

In Mexico they have a phrase for Trump, Trump Eres Un Pendejo, Trump, you’re an arsehole.

Sales of Nineteen Eighty-Four soar

June 13, 2013

One of the consequences of the expose by Edward Snowden of the NSA PRISM mass surveillance programme is that sales of Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell have soared.

What we have seen is Big Brother writ large.

Published in 1949, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a chilling account of the future, where everything we do is monitored by Big Brother. Nothing we do escapes the attention of Big Brother, and if we err and incur the displeasure, we will be exposed and destroyed.

Revelation of PRISM has caused a huge backlash in the US, but this is nothing compared with the outrage across Europe.

There has also been some brutal attacks, calling Edward Snowden a traitor and worse. One rabid politician practically foaming at the mouth has called for all journalists associated with Edward Snowden to be prosecuted.

But these are the exceptions.

There are calls for hearings, investigations, for James Clapper National Director Intelligence to be prosecuted, questions are being asked how did PRISM come about.

DNI James Clapper appears to have lied to Congress in previous testimony, hence the calls for him to be prosecuted, and if he lied about PRISM, what else did he lie about?

Back at an open Congressional hearing on 12 March, Sen Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) asked Clapper, “Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?” Clapper replied, “No sir … not wittingly.” As we all now know, he was lying.

Nor was this a spontaneous lie or a lie he regretted making. Sen Ron Wyden revealed in a recent statement that he’d given Clapper advance notice that he would ask the question and that, after the hearing, he offered Clapper a chance to revise his answer. Clapper didn’t take the offer.

Speaking once PRISM was exposed, James Clapper comes across as a bumbling buffoon, a complete moron. How did this idiot ever get appointed as Director of National Intelligence?

One of the biggest lies peddled by Clapper is that mass surveillance deals with terrorism.

One of the least threats facing us is terrorism, but it is used a bogey man to clamp down on civil liberties, to infiltrate and disrupt democratic challenges to the status quo. We deal with terrorism, by addressing the causes. We track down terrorists, use good old fashioned police work. Maybe US should look to its drone attacks.
