Lunch at Caffe Macchiato

September 30, 2020

I was looking forward to lunch at Indonesian street food restaurant but as last week I found closed. Closed down? Nothing to say. People will do as I have done, visit once, visit twice, maybe a third time, but after than not bother.

Caffe Macchiato changed hands last year and now under a new owner.

I have not visited since it had changed hands.

I was surprised how busy, I have never seen so busy, not to my liking, but I have not visited before at lunchtime.

I ordered pollo crema a funghi.

A long wait, but then was busy and everything is freshly cooked.

Not too happy served on a cold plate.

Of grave concern lax covid-19 biosecurity. Waiters either not wearing masks or not wearing correctly, kitchen staff wandering around no mask, but my greatest concern the same greasy laminated menus.

Please wear masks. The menus incinerate. Drastically cut down the choice, put on the wall, and hand patrons a printed paper sheet which is then disposed of.

I noticed baclava on sale. I asked where the man was from. He said Bagdad and learned to make whilst living in Baghdad.

Peroni

Late lunch at Caffe Macchiato, pollo crema a funghi (breast of chicken cooked with porcini mushrooms, onions and cream sauce) with a side salad and a bottle of Peroni.

The main dish served with chips. New potatoes would have been superior to chips, or offered as a choice.

Excellent, but large portion size, a struggle to finish.

Free wifi, newspapers, pleasant atmosphere, with art on the walls by Amelia.

Occasionally open in the evening with live music (for which it is necessary to book).

Currently, the street outside is traffic free due to work in the street. It needs to be made permanent traffic free.

Caffe Macchiato used to be open until seven, but now closes at six. A pity not open until seven in the summer, as pleasant to sit outside in the summer (or at least it is when no smokers).

Aldershot is infamous for its tacky junk food outlets, Caffe Macchiato an unexpected gem of fine cuisine.

Excellent lunch at Caffe Macchiato.

Pollo buscaiola, breast of chicken cooked with wine, peppers, served with porcini mushrooms in a garlic and tomato sauce, chips and a side salad.

Portion size always generous, and I struggled to finish.

I washed my lunch down with a bottle of Peroni.

Caffe Macchiato is usually quiet, this afternoon very busy, poor waitress literally run off her feet. I think the reason why, hot sunny afternoon, it had its windows wide open, and thus was tempting to go in.

Everything freshly cooked with fresh ingredients.

Caffe Macchiato is an Italian restaurant at the top end of Union Street. The only attractive building in the street.

Union Street was an attractive tree-lined street, pleasant to sit outside Caffe Macchiato on a warm afternoon. All the trees have been cut down and uprooted, leaving an unpleasant stark urban street.

For the last six months, traffic has been blocked from the pedestrianised street whilst work takes place. This needs to be made permanent, as the absence of traffic has much improved the street.

Aldershot is infamous for its disgusting fast food outlets that dominate the town centre, that and pound shops, gambling joints and boarded-up empty shops. Caffe Macchiato is a rarity being the only decent place to eat in Aldershot. Indeed it is even worth making a trip to Aldershot.

End of last year an idiot left a very nasty review on TripAdvisor claiming poor service, unpleasant staff, not freshly cooked or fresh ingredients. Nothing could be further from than the truth.  TripAdvisor needs to do more to eliminate fake reviews.

Free newspapers, wifi.

The walls are used as an art gallery. Worth a visit for the art.

Occasional live music in the evening.

Excellent lunch at Caffe Macchiato.

Pollo buscaiola, breast of chicken cooked with wine, peppers, served with porcini mushrooms in a garlic and tomato sauce, chips and a side salad.

The side salad, very similar to a Greek salad, was served first, which was good, as I was hungry.

In the spring, it would be better to serve with English or Jersey new potatoes rather than chips.

Portion generous. More than sufficient for two people.

Everything freshly prepared from fresh ingredients.

Occasional live music in the evening. The next live music is on St Valentine’s day, but it is already overbooked.

Aldershot is infamous for its disgusting junk food outlets, which dominate the town.

Therefore to find somewhere decent to eat in Aldershot, could almost be classed as a miracle.

Caffe Macchiato is one such place.

A lovely little restaurant, seating outside, inside, art on the walls.

Everything is freshly prepared, from fresh, wherever possible locally sourced ingredients, fresh, not dried herbs.

Spaghetti con polpette, spaghetti with meatballs, onion and tomato sauce, was delicious. Nicely presented. Generous portion size, indeed over generous. Fresh ground pepper was added, as was Parmesan cheese.

I returned later and had a cappuccino sttting outside.

Caffe Macchiato used to be excellent for coffee, and I often drop by for a coffee, but something is going wrong with their coffee. What I do not know. I suspect the beans, though it could also be the machine.

Sitting outside is very pleasant, or would be, were it not for the crass stupidity of the local council allowing late afternoon traffic through a pedestrianised street. And it could get worse if plans by the council to pour £4.5 million down the drain, for which there has been no consultation, digging up and repaving the street, are not stopped.

Caffe Macchiato used to stay open until 7pm, but now closes at 6pm.

Occasional live music in the evening.

Free wifi.
