Parody of the American tourist in Athens?

April 14, 2021

Is this meant to be a parody of American tourists in Athens? If yes, then at best mildly amusing.

Or is it meant to be taken seriously? If yes, then dire as displays an appalling lack of understanding of coffee culture in Athens.

Mokka is an excellent coffee shop, outside Athens Central Market. A wide variety of coffee on offer. One of the few coffee shops brewing Greek coffee on a bed of hot sand.

Mokka also has an adjacent shop selling coffee.

Across the road, the fruit and veg market worth exploring.

More usual to find Greek coffee over a flame, as will find at Just Made 33 (just off Ermou).

A few years ago then barista at Just Made 33 won the world championship for Ibrik coffee. The coffee used on sale at Just Made 33.

Coffee Island is the Greek Starbucks, to be avoided if care about coffee.

Spoilt for choice with excellent coffee shops in New York. Why therefore would anyone wish for Coffee Island in New York when already have Starbucks serving bad coffee? [see Drift Manhattan edition]

Frappé is not a Greek drink. It is an example of cultural colonisation by a global corporation. An unpleasant cold frothy coffee made with Nescafe.

And no, do not walk down the street drinking out of plastic, even worse bragging about it.

Coffee sit and relax outside a coffee shop with coffee served in glass or ceramic and watch the world go by.

Takeaway coffee at Just Made 33

November 25, 2020

Three weeks ago, wandering through the streets of Athens to see what was open.

Tuesday, the day before, all restaurants bars and coffee shops ordered to close. They could serve takeaway if chose to do so.

Just Made 33, open for food and coffee take away only.

Can sit on a wall outside with a takeaway coffee but cannot sit at a table outside. Inside people waiting to order a coffee, if tables outside would be socially distanced served by a waitress. Not that tables outside would be possible due to a hole in the street. There was a hole in the street last year. I inquire of a lady taking notes. An ancient wall has been unearthed. It is being documented then the hole carefully infilled.

Just Made 33

I had looked in Just Made 33 on my way to Exarchia Square.

I was pleased to find open and had a brief chat with the owner.

I had passed by several times and not found open. Closed as I suspected, digging up the street outside, Sunday a respite.

On my return from Exarchia Square I managed to find Just Made 33, but owner not there.

Staff have always been pleasant and friendly, service good. Not today. Miserable to the point of being rude, service poor, a not very pleasant atmosphere.

I watched the barista. Not a clue on pouring a V60, though no problem with my cappuccino.

Late afternoon, even before sun has set turning cold.

Cappuccino at Just Made 33

The baristas of last year all appear to have left. And it shows. The female barista I met several days ago, not there.

A cappuccino and a cake.

I then went in search of Peek a Bloom which is nearby. Could I find?

No. Or at least I did eventually, hidden down an alley.

Cappuccino by candlelight at Just Made 33

Coffee has not only to be good, it has to be consistently good.

Just Made 33 achieves that consistency. Whenever I have had a coffee, no matter who has served me, it has been excellent.

As I was walking past, I looked in The Underdog.

As last Sunday, hit by a wall of sound.

I decided not to stay and continued to Just Made 33.

Excellent cappuccino.

Not my order. V60 using Panama roasted by Sapid.

Cappuccino at Just Made 33

October 28, 2017

Morning pleasant and sunny and warm.  Afternoon cool and cloudy. Evening rain and cold.

I made Just Made 33 as it started to rain. The temperature dropped. Even inside it turned cold.

For me a cappuccino and chocolate bar.

Cappuccino excellent.

I watched an Ibrik being brewed, Greek coffee.

I am used to a small copper pot. This a different shape.

And a different method.

Brought to the boil, rises to the top, then removed from the flame, but nor reatedly brought to the boil.

The coffee ground very fine, almost like powder.

Then green tea being made in a vessel I have only seen in Athens.

The tea allowed to brew, then dropped into a carafe below.

I knew Just Made 33 made excellent sandwiches and cakes, but not hot dishes, but then I have never looked at the menu, nor am I there lunchtime or in the evening.

Interesting conversation with barista and waitress, both knowledgeable on coffee.

Lunch at Just Made 33

October 23, 2017

The food at  Just Made 33 always looks enticing.

Although I had already eaten, I decided to have one of their open sandwiches, though my real reason was a V60 using their Panama Geisha.

The sandwich was excellent.

I was though to be disappointed with the Geisha. They had none left.

I settled for a freddo cappuccino.
