Koda Studios

September 15, 2019

Koda is one of two excellent shops in Paragon Arcade, the other Two Gingers.

The furniture in Koda from beautifully crafted from large blocks of wood.

I would suggest add Drift and a Japanese syphon on show and of course V60. On the walls frame art from from local artists.

I was reminded of 101 Coffee Espresso Bar in Jericho in Oxford and Makushsi half way up Steep Hill in Lincoln where they have tables from large pieces of wood.

Strange though how creative people can be so clueless on use of social media. Links to Instagram on twitter no pictures, businesses card mentions social media but no account shown.

We need to fill our world with fewer but better designed things, that last, that are pleasing to the eye and to the touch, style over fashion. And if we are ethical, not only not post what we do on Instagram, but not encourage others to use Instagram.

Cold sunny afternoon in Hull

February 15, 2019

A hard frost first thing in the morning. Cold sunny afternoon in Hull. A cold breeze blowing in off the sea.

The low sun over the Humber as train approaches Hull a little before the Humber Bridge.

I am pleased to see Paragon Arcade is slowly slowly being restored to its original splendour.

Occasional evening events in Paragon Arcade.

I had only meant to look in Two Gingers to say hi, but as I was chatting, decided to stay and have a cappuccino.

By far the best cappuccino all day. Their own blend from The Blending Room.

They also have guest coffee from La Cabra Coffee, a Danish coffee roastery.

Suggestions for future guest coffee:

  • Athens – Taf – The Underdog
  • Nottingham – Cartwheel Coffee – Outpost Coffee
  • Brighton – Coffee at 33 – Pharmacie

Tea pigs not quality tea. Added as an afterthought, but indie coffee shops these days do make the effort to source quality teas.

Imperial Teas in Lincoln a good starting point.

Two Gingers had no wish to be listed in the scam Indie Coffee Guide, thus a cheek listed against their wishes.

Next door White Rabbit which I had not noticed before. But if you are going to open a chocolatier, please have quality chocolate and employ people who know about chocolate.

Quality chocolate has to be bean to bar, not bought in chocolate melted down and remoulded.

And please note quality chocolate:

  • cocoa mass – sugar
  • cocoa mass – cocoa butter – sugar – vanilla

Anything else is not quality chocolate. Quality chocolate is not bulked out with emulsifier. In the US legal definition of chocolate excludes emulsifiers. Emulsifier used because cheaper than cocoa butter.

The bars of chocolate excellent copy of Hotel Chocolat, the look and feel even down to obscene use of plastic and addition of emulsifiers to what is claimed to be quality expensive chocolate.

Near the Maritime Museum a new coffee kiosk, The Lost Flip Flop.

The coffee I did not try, but catering supply coffee from a coffee roastery in Surrey I have never heard of.

Do not touch with a barge pole Cupsmith tea or coffee, nor Surrey Hills Coffee. Chimney Fire Coffee in the Surrey Hills maybe.

There are though many excellent coffee roasteries. To buy in cheap crap commodity coffee is a bad move and to serve poor quality coffee on a hiding to nothing when can buy poor quality coffee from the corporate chains.

Tea poor quality tea pigs.

On to Trinity Market.

None too pleased to find Shoot the Bull had stopped serving. What is the point of quality food if piss-poor service?

A falafel off The Falafia. ok but not great.

Cappuccino off Caffeinated.

When I first encountered Caffeinated least year I was told to be in the scam Indie Coffee Guide was a mistake, a mistake they would not be repeating. And no, they are not listed in the latest edition, apart from an entry in the back. But why then tell me they sold all their copies when previously said unable to shift and ended up giving away. And it would be amazing if they did sell when no one else manages to sell.

The concept of Trinity Market is excellent, and puts to shame the disgusting Central Market in Lincoln, but standards are slipping, the Yorkshire pudding stall in the corner for example and the low environmental standards are not acceptable. Food served in polystyrene boxes. Why is it council run markets always have low standards?

Hull Old Town is unfortunately crossed by a busy heavily polluted road which is difficult to cross. No help to those businesses such as Thieving Harry’s located on the other side. At the very least operate the pedestrianise crossings more frequently.

Cappuccino at Thieving Harry’s far better than it looked.

Thieving Harry’s are featured in Coffee Shop North. Quite wisely they have pulled out of the scam Indie Coffee Guide though like Caffienated still listed at the back.

Thieving Harry’s an excellent location to watch the setting sun this time of year.

There are three coffee shops worth a visit in Hull, Two Gingers, Caffienated and Thieving Harry’s. Of the three, Two Gingers in another league, partly the skill of the barista and partly they choose their own blend.

Museum of the Moon

September 1, 2018

Incredible exhibit in Hull Minster.

A suspended model of the moon filling the nave. Quite surreal.

Part of Hull Freedom Festival.

Outside in Trinity Square, a helpful guide you must go in Hull Minster and see the moon. Tempted but on my way to Thieving Harry’s, maybe if I have time on my return. She was quite insistent. I gave in. And yes, a must see.

What did you think, she asked, as she encountered me again in Trinity Square? Amazing, well worth a visit.

Thieving Harry’s

August 31, 2018

To get to Thieving Harry’s is not easy. Hull Old Town is cut in two by a very busy main road, with no easy way to cross.

Two crossings out of the way, the middle crossing, the lights not working and barricaded off the central reservation.

Long wait at the crossing to cross. Would not make a jot of difference to the traffic if less of a wait, as traffic at a crawl.

Cutting in half, apart from the inconvenience, it is damaging the businesses in this part of Hull Old Town as far fewer people on the other side of the road.

Caffeinated in Trinity Market had kindly marked my map, Thieving Harry’s not difficult to find.

Located overlooking the old docks and the sea in the office of what was once when a thriving shipping dock a fruit merchant.

An excellent cappuccino.

Coffee sourced from The Blending Room. I came away with two bags of single origin from Indonesia.

Coffee from Indonesia is not often found for the simple reason Indonesia produces poor quality coffee. There are though exceptions.

We have a problem with plastic, plastic-lined paper takeaway cups, plastic cups, plastic utensils, plastic straws.

As always it is the indie coffee shops leading the way. Compostable cups, refillable cups, though best to relax with coffee in glass or ceramic, paper straws.

Thieving Harry’s showed me something I had not seen before, drinking straws made from shells.

Thieving Harry’s is featured in Coffee Shop North.

I was given a copy of The North and North Wales Independent Coffee Guide in which Thieving Harry’s is also featured.

The North and North Wales Independent Coffee Guide is a scam. It is not what it claims to be an independent guide to speciality coffee shops.

How credible an indie coffee guide when those listed are paying £500 each for a listing? When coffee shops that do not deserve a listing are listed? When those that deserve a listing are not listed? When the coffee shops are writing their own entries?

Coffee shops are approached by the publisher to have an entry. Part of the scam is to be given a pile of ‘free books’, free books that do not sell, free books that end up being sold off on the cheap or given away.

To find excellent coffee shops, follow your feet, when find a good coffee shop, ask, they will recommend others. That was how I found my way around Hull Old Town, one coffee shop at a time.

And dare I say, follow on-line The Little Bicycle Coffee Shop.

Two Gingers

August 31, 2018

Two Gingers is an excellent little coffee shop located in Paragon Arcade, half way between Hull Station and Hull Old Town.

They have their own house blend and speciality coffee sourced from The Blending Room, a local coffee roastery.

I chose a cappuccino from their house blend. Excellent.

Two Gingers is not featured in Coffee Shop North, but Luke Smith is featured from when he worked at Thieving Harry’s.

I looked in later, picked up two bags of their house blend.

I would have liked a V60 from one of their single origin coffees, but no time.

On a previous visit in May, guest coffee, but maybe no longer offer guest coffee.

The house blend is a single origin from Ethiopia, roasted by local roastery The Blending Room. The artwork by Tinned Sandwich, a local artist.

Hull Freedom Festival

August 31, 2018

Freedom Festival, a three day festival in Hull.

Freedom Festival was started in 2007 to commemorate the anti-slavery pioneer William Wilberforce.

Train to Hull, stunning views over the Humber Estuary and of the Humber Bridge.

On arrival at Hull Station, greeted by Philip Larkin.

Then head to Hull Old Town, cobbled streets (strictly speaking setts) but first a detour to Two Gingers in Paragon Arcade.

Excellent cappuccino in Two Gingers.

They have recently introduced their own house blend from The Blending Room, plus single origin coffee from The Blending Room.

Zeberdee’s Yard locked off, rehearsals for a concert tonight.

Lunch in Trinity Market.

I went round the stalls, twice. None looked appetising, appalling environmental standards, food served in polystyrene boxes, plastic utensils.

Burger off Shoot the Bull. Rare breed beef, burger excellent, service not so good. No, do not put ketchup on without asking, and no, do not blame the customer for not telling you.

No mention of the offer of a meal deal with a beer. Skip the fries, offer a decent craft beer. Brew Dog Punk IPA would go down a treat with a quality burger.

Asked of Caffeinated where to locate Thieving Harry’s. They kindly marked on a map of Hull Old Town.

Passing by Hull Minster, a guide said I must enter and look at the moon. No time, maybe on my return. She was insistent. Amazing, a suspended moon occupying the nave, quite surreal. Yes, she was correct Museum of the Moon in Hull Minster an absolute must visit.

To get to the part of Hull Old Town where Thieving Harry’s is located, have to cross a busy main road with no convenient crossings, one crossing closed and long wait at the lights when crossing.

Pedestrians should have priority. The traffic is at a virtual standstill. The crossings should be more frequent for pedestrians, it will make not a jot of difference to the traffic flow.

Thieving Harry’s overlooks the old docks now a marina and the sea. Located in what was once the offices of a fruit merchant, the old Fruit Market was located in this part of Hull Old Town.

Picked up a couple of bags of coffee.

A diversion to Trinity Market to collect two bags of coffee off Caffeinated.

As I cut across Trinity Square a giant puppet had been erected. This was one of the giant puppets to parade through the Hull Old Town later that evening as part of Hull Freedom Festival.

I pop in Two Gingers and pick up two bags of their house blend. I would have wished for a V60 pour over, but no time.

All three coffee shops use The Blending Room, a Hull coffee roastery. Today they had a pop up coffee stall. Where, no one knew, and they lacked the courtesy to respond to a query. What is the point of tweeting have a pop up stall for the Freedom Festival and do not say where? Yet another example of poor use of social media.

Made the station in time for my train, just, only to find no train, running late.

Stunning views across the Humber Estuary out of the train window and of wind turbines.

Caffeinated

May 5, 2018

Trinity Square, with Hull Minster centre stage.  More strange fountains, this time squares in the square, water flows upwards, flows to the edge.

On one side, Trinity Market.

Trinity Market a recently refurbished Edwardian market, the oldest covered market in Hull. Stripped back exposing the iron columns and girders, open and airy. They have attempted to create something like Borough Market in London, artisan food and other independent traders.

It was within Trinity Market I found Caffeinated.

From Caffeinated excellent cappuccino. A very knowledgeable and helpful young couple running the stall.

A good selection of coffee.

A lady complained, flat white too small and too expensive at £2-20. No pleasing some folk. A long way to go to educate people.

As I found in York, The North and North Wales Independent Coffee Guide being sold off.  No surprise, everyone is becoming wise to this marketing scam. Pay £500, write your own entry, and the books do not sell.

If wish to find excellent coffee shops, find one excellent coffee shop, then ask.

It was suggested I tried Thieving Harry’s and Two Gingers. No time for Thieving Harry’s,  Two Gingers was on the way to the station therefore  Two Gingers it was.

Two Gingers Coffee House

May 5, 2018

Chatting with Caffeinated in Trinity Market, it was suggested I try two coffee shops, Thieving Harry’s and Two Gingers.

Pushed for time, Two Gingers was en route to Hull Station and so Two Gingers it was.

Two Gingers is located within Paragon Arcade.

No time for anything other than a cappuccino, which I am sorry to say I then poured into a takeaway cup (had I not I would have missed my train).

I noticed a copy of Coffee Shop North, to be told by the barista who served me, former head barista at Thieving Harry’s, that he was in it.

I thought he meant Two Gingers was one of the featured coffee shops. No, he was in it personally from his time at Thieving Harry’s.

A wide selection of coffee on offer.

Liquid Jade

May 5, 2018

Liquid Jade, hidden down an alley, Zebedee’s Yard off Whitefriargate.

Pleasant ambience.

The focus on tea and food. Yes, did have coffee, but would not tell me where from.

Perverse. I lacked the time to enjoy the food, and declined to try the coffee. Transparency is everything.

Owner very helpful, suggested places to visit and kindly marked my map.

Hull Old Town

May 5, 2018

A hot and sunny Mayday Bank Holiday Saturday.

Afternoon in Hull was more of a fleeting visit, it took longer there and back than the couple of hours I was there.

A very hot day, even waiting at Doncaster Station it was hot. Doncaster Station is grim, and a pain to change trains. Last couple of times cool, today hot and sunny. A pity though about the drunks everywhere.

Train to Hull, passes by a coal mine not long after leaving Doncaster. Wind farms en route. As approach Hull, stunning view of Humber Bridge.

On leaving Hull Station greeted by statue of poet Philip Larkin. Most confusing that it is not called Hull Station.

My destination Hull Old Town. Lacking a map, I headed in the correct direction.

Drunks spilling out of pubs onto the street outside. Not pleasant.

Interesting fountains, jets of water out of the ground, fun for the kids on a  hot day.

Maritime Museum had free maps, at least I assumed they were free.

Liquid Jade, hidden down an alley, Zebedee’s Yard off Whitefriargate. Pleasant ambience. Mainly tea and food. Yes, did have coffee, but would not tell me where from. Perverse. Trinity Square, with Hull Minster centre stage.  More strange fountains, this time squares in the square, water flows upwards, flows to the edge.

Statue of poet Andrew Marvel.

Trinity Market a recently refurbished Edwardian market, the oldest covered market in Hull. Stripped back exposing the iron columns and girders, open and airy. They have attempted to create something like Borough Market in London, artisan food and other independent traders.

It was here I found Caffeinated.

From Caffeinated excellent cappuccino. A very knowledgeable and helpful young couple running the stall.

As I was leaving a stage was being set up. Live music later?

I was recommended by Caffeinated try Thieving Harry’s and Two Gingers.

I passed by McCoy’s overlooking Princess Quay, but no time for a coffee.

Two Gingers was en route to the station. No time for anything other than a cappuccino, which I am sorry to say I then poured into a takeaway cup (had I not I would have missed my train).

Not much time to explore Hull Old Town, but now I know where it is, next time with more time to spend well worth another visit.
