Winds of Change

July 24, 2019

Very moving BBC Radio 4 documentary on Winds of Change how it came to be written, impact on people’s lives, interwoven with East Berlin and fall of Berlin Wall, and hopes of people in Soviet Union.

Meant a lot to me as at Checkpoint Charlie in May, walked along a stretch of the Berlin Wall, was in East Berlin.

Also Rudolf Schenker of Scorpions a friend.

Had me in tears.

A pity BBC did not play song in full, spine chilling.

For me chilling to walk along the Berlin Wall, to visit Checkpoint Charlie.

Inspiration for Winds of Change was a peace concert in Moscow, and Perestroika under Mikhail Gorbachev.

When the Berlin Wall fell, people across Europe had hope.

Now we have a thuggish state in Russia headed by Vladimir Putin, rise of Fascism across Europe, political show trials in Spain.

Escape over the Berlin Wall from East Berlin

May 11, 2019

The story of a daring escape over the Berlin Wall from East Berlin to West Berlin.

A graphic novel on the fence tells the story of Holzapfel family and their daring escape over the Berlin Wall.

On July 29 1965, Heinz Holzapfel travelled with his wife and son from Leipzig to East Berlin.

The family hid out in a ministry building close to the wall before heading to the roof and signalling with a torch to helpers in West Berlin, who threw them a nylon rope tied to a hammer.

The night of the escape was cold and windy and the flight across the wall, in a pulley made from a bicycle wheel and a sling, was highly dangerous.

Berlin Wall

May 11, 2019

The Berlin Wall divided East from West Berlin.

Those who attempted to cross the Wall, to escape from East Berlin to West Berlin, were shot.

The U-Bahn still ran through East Berlin, passing through stations, but did not stop.

The only crossing point Checkpoint Charlie.
