Afternoon in Godalming

December 12, 2017

A cold hard frost this morning.

A couple of minutes only to change trains at Guildford. I usually make it, but not today. Train was running late. I may have made it, but stopped to speak to the guard to alert that carry on luggage sitting on the luggage rack where I had been sat was not mine. Arrived at the platform as train doors were closing.

35 minutes wait for the next train. That was why I caught the earlier train, 20 minutes wait if I had caught the next train.

FCB kiosk not open. It luckily opened after about ten minutes.

Excellent Colombian guest coffee from Dark Woods Coffee.

Half the coaches of the train freezing cold with air conditioning units blasting out cold air.

A walk along the River Wey. Pockets of frost in the grass. Ground waterlogged, pools of standing water.

Not much choice at Cafe Mila. I choose vegetable soup followed by quiche. Waitress brings me soup, says she will then bring quiche. I explain no. She asks was it the main course? What did she think I was going to do, dunk the quiche in my soup?

I had brought copies of Caffeine and The Alchemist to drop off. Whilst I am not looking, vanish from the table. I assume over-zealous waitress.

All the good staff appear to have left.

I walk to Waitrose at the other end of Godalming.

Throwaway coffee cups filling the bin. Waitrose contribution to the 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups thrown away every year. There is a cafe at Waitrose. Why do they not encourage customers to use the cafe? Though I note there is a queue. Or, compostable paper cups, with a bin for the cups?

What do they do with the coffee grounds? They could put outside with the garden gear and plants, free for gardeners to collect.

Two-month old coffee on the shelves is not doing Union any favours.

For mid-afternoon, mid-week, Waitrose busy. Not all the checkouts manned.

A slight detour to basket shop to say hello and wish Merry Christmas. I drop of The Fifth Mountain and The Devil and Miss Prym.

I look in Waterstone’s. Only one coffee book, the utterly useless Where to Drink Coffee. I draw to the attention of helpful assistants. They open book and see, yes, useless. I ask why, when we have many coffee shops, why no books on coffee? They agree, very strange.

I make it to Cafe Mila before it closes. Now closes early at four o’clock.

Pecan pie and a mug of tea spoilt by handful of out of control screaming kids. No one attempts to control them or keep them quiet.

Cupsmith is low quality catering supply coffee. Cafe Mila need to source better coffee. Hence my drinking tea not coffee.

It is commendable Cafe Mila may wish to source their coffee locally, support local businesses, but not if it means buying poor quality coffee. How local is local? High quality coffee can be sourced from The Roasting Party or from Horsham Coffee, and why not have occasional guest coffees? The world has moved on from serving low quality catering coffee, leave that to the chains.

I walk to the station. Train again cold with air conditioning units blasting out cold air.

Pleasant warm afternoon, hazy sun, occasional blue sky.

A bridge has been built across the line at Godalming Station. It is unfortunate that it is out of character with the station that has kept its Victorian character.

Candle lit, but no prayer card writ (as there were none) in Parish Church  for Mavis in hospital with a fractured shoulder (but slowly, slowly recovering).

Chairs had been put on top of brasses and other artefacts in the floor.

I moved all the chairs.

Why do churches not take better care of their heritage?

Friday lunchtime concerts. Mainly organ recitals.

Why not invite Jewelia to play the piano?

I was pleased to see the churchyard has been left as a hay meadow, paths cut through the grass.

A lesson for Farnham Parish Church which has cut its grass.

A pleasant walk along the River Wey.

I was surprised how how the hogweed. I do not recall it ever being this high before.

Walking up through Church Street, I saw the little coffee shop cum cake shop had closed. I was not surprised, it has been there a couple of years, and I have yet to see anyone in it.

Lunch at Cafe Mila was a disappointment, not their usual high standard. The soup was ok, the main, a sort of curried vegetables was not good.

Cafe Mila need to up their game on their coffee. The world has moved on. They need to source beans from a quality independent roaster. Try Horsham or Surrey Hills.

I learnt from the butcher when the Godalming Food Festival will be.

The Godalming Food Company changed hands last year. Changes since I last visited. Now half a coffee shop. Poor choice of cakes. Contrary to the sign outside, not the best coffee in Godalming. They source poor quality beans, and the guy making the coffee not a clue, and it was undrinkable. Not as bad as Costa, but in that ballpark.

A lady said, go further up the High Street, you will find something much better.

I do not think I have ever ventured beyond the museum and the bus stop.

Changing Perceptions, what a  delightful surprise. Tea room cum coffee shop, wide choice of teas and cakes.  A tea shop that sells paint and furniture. But there was even bigger surprise in store. Wander through the back and it opens out into a workshop where furniture is restored.

I had a flapjack and a pot of tea. I did not have a coffee because I still had the foul taste of the coffee from the Godalming Food Company.

Long wait for 71 bus. Half and hour late and had still not turned up. I caught the 46.

The 46 used to run ten minutes or there about after the 71, but now seems to run at random times.

A pleasant bus ride through sunken lanes.

Yesterday was cold, more like winter, luckily not today, but by evening, had turned cold.

Looked in Godalming Parish Church. Candles lit, prayer cards writ.

An interesting and quite moving display on World War One. Shocking the millions killed.

WWI was the result of one fatal shot, and the major players badly misreading and reacting to the events. We are still living WWI, the conflicts in Europe and Middle East, the refugee crisis, are all unfinished business from WWI.

I picked up a few leaflets, which I meant to and did not hand to local businesses. The leaflet was encouraging people to buy on-line from big business, a tiny trickle down to the church. Extremely short sighted. It would be far better to encourage people to shop local, support local businesses, support the local economy.

A walk along the River Wey. It seemed higher and muddier than usual. There was very heavy rain Sunday night.

Cattle in the water meadow opposite, walk into the river to drink.

Lunch at Cafe Mila, which sadly was not up to their usual high standard. Soup was excellent, but the chickpea curry was awful. The service too was not good.

The deli, Godalming Food Shop, or whatever it is called, has changed hands though nothing to say it has. I asked, new man behind the counter and fresh vegetables (which is new).

I returned to Cafe Mila for afternoon tea, only to find they had closed early. Not good, close early, people will think twice late afternoon, then on a downward spiral.

I thought I had missed the bus, then saw it 20 minutes late, so hopped on.

Church Street

A strange mixed day, sunny and warm, cloudy and windy and cool.

Godalming Parish Church churchyard a lovely hay meadow. This is what the churchyard at Farnham Parish Church churchyard should look like. Why oh why did they cut the grass?

Two interesting characters tucked away in the corner in Godalming Parish Church.

James Edward Oglethorpe (1696-1785) founder of the US State of Georgia.

Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932), artist, gardener and craftswoman.

A walk alongside the River Wey.

A new cafe has opened in Church Street. It appeared busy, but misleading, people sat by the window gave the impression busy, in reality it was empty. Did they have to paint the outside of the shop bright red? An appalling eyesore in Church Street, out of character with the street. Some people have appalling bad taste and complete lack of sense of aesthetics. Is the street not a Conservation Area? If yes, local council should take action.

Lunch at Cafe Mila.

I am always amazed to find The Godalming Food Company still in business. A very upmarket food shop. Ludicrously expensive and always empty.

Did they have coffee beans? Yes they did, but no mention of roast date. I put a big question mark against any coffee roaster who does not list the roast date. A best by date is meaningless. A check was made, and I was given a roast date. Whether the roast date, or when bought in, a moot point.

Coffee when roasted, leave a week, then an optimum window of three weeks to enjoy the coffee at its best.

I was told roast date 23 April, St George’s Day. Almost three weeks ago. Marginal.

Two different bags of coffee beans.

The Godalming Blend, a blend of Ugandan, Colombian and Sumatran coffee. Does The Godalming Food Shop know enough about coffee to dictate the blend? I doubt it. They are not a quality coffee shop.

Happy Coffee Bean (the name sufficient to put one off), arabica coffee from Uganda. Concept good, support a coffee coop in Uganda, Ugandan Bukonzo. It is also local and locally roasted, circulating money within the local economy.

Fair Trade is well past its sell by date. Many roasters now import direct from known coffee estates.

A frosty morning.

I met up with Jewelia and Andy.

Jewelia playing Schiedmayer piano in Godalming Parish Church

Jewelia playing Schiedmayer piano in Godalming Parish Church

We headed to Godalming Parish Church, where there is a beautiful Schiedmayer piano.

The piano had been moved from its usual location for a concert tomorrow. This proved to be ideal, as Jewelia was able to play the piano and at the same time check out the church acoustics.

Both were excellent.

A walk along the River Wey.

We left Café Mila, by which time the temperature had dropped.

A look in the Parish Church, then Godalming Station.

This morning the grass was very wet. Rain during the night, heavy dew, mist? I think one the latter two, as in the fields in the shade white with dew.

As yesterday, a lovely warm sunny day.

For several days, Reading-Guildford train (onwards to Redhill or Gatwick) has been running late on arrival at North Camp, then running slow en-route to Guildford, arriving in Guildford several minutes late. Why I do not know. No explanation or apology on train. Luckily I did not miss train to Godalming, as it too running late. Again no explanation or apology. I asked at Godalming Station. Did not know, but when I said Reading-Redhill train late, was told the London-Haslemere train held to let it pass. Useful to know as means I would not miss the train in future, not unless arriving train was very late.

In Godalming Parish Church rows of candles, all burnt half way down. No idea why.

swan on River Wey

swan on River Wey

Sitting balancing on a piece of wood on the banks of the River Wey, all peace and quiet between myself and a pair of swans, until an obnoxious woman with dirty dog and child in tow arrived. I pointed out swans were getting angry and if they did not leave, they would attack. Thankfully they took the hint.

Excellent lunch at Cafe Mila, pumpkin soup followed by a tart stuffed with vegetables.

New charity shop in Godalming, Dogs Trust. Unlike Oxfam and British Heart Foundation, not ripping people off. Water for dogs. Looks more like a boutique than a charity shop. But a pity they did not show more empathy for the building, where it was white, painted dark grey almost black and a horrible garish yellow sign. They could have left as is, and engaged a sign-writer to write Dogs Trust.

Afternoon tea at Cafe Mila. Bad news, they will be closing at four o’clock, which is not good news.

No 71 bus only a few minutes late. Previous two running half an hour late.

Church Street

Church Street

I was surprised how cold it was when I alighted at Godalming Station.

Was it different location or was it temperature falling during the day?

A big storm was due to hit during the night. The remnants of a hurricane that devastated Barbados over the weekend. I cannot say I noticed, but this morning it was very windy, and reports of extensive damage from across the country.

The first big storm of the autumn. Trees still have most of their leaves hence maximum damage. Storms are arriving earlier and earlier, and of increasing severity.

If we hold global temperature rise to less than 2C we are going to see an increase in severity of storms. Ideally we should hold to less than 1.5C. But with the amount of carbon we are pumping into the atmosphere, we are unlikely to hold to 2C. If we go beyond 2C, the models start to break down and we are likely to face thermal runway.

But it is still businesses as usual. And when we use austerity as excuse for Shock Doctrine, slash and burn of public services, we are in not in a good position to withstand shocks to the system, as we saw with the floods and storms last winter (which stated with autumn storms, and we have already had nearly two weeks of rain).

A look in the Parish Church. Where prayer cards are left, and candles lit. I noticed a memorial book for our animal friends. And why not, they are as much a member of the family.

A walk along the River Wey. Very cold.

Lunch at Café Mila. It was packed. I have never seen it this packed.

Even upstairs was packed.

mushroom soup

cauliflower and sweet potato curry

cauliflower and sweet potato curry

I ordered mushroom soup followed by a curry. Both were brought up to me by the chef.

The mushroom soup was excellent. Often soup is sloshed around a bowl. Not when the chef serves. Presentation is equally important. Generous portions too.

The curry was ok. Not what I would have chosen, but everything else had gone. More like a broth. It lacked body. I would have added some chopped up boiled new potatoes.

Lunchtime eateries in Winchester have a lot to learn. In Ginger Gelato, watery tomato soup. Lunch consists of a little more than ciabatta with a little melted cheese. Were Café Mila Winchester to open I cannot see anyone else surviving.

A little wander through Godalming.

Tea and cake in Café Mila. Not much choice left on the cakes.

sunset over Frensham Pond

Catch 4-30 bus to Aldershot. Three counties, Surrey, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, through the Surrey Hills. I thought it might be heavy rain, a nightmare journey, but luckily sunny. Sunset over Frensham Pond. A pity the bus drivers do not clean their windows.

When I get off the bus over an hour and a half later, very cold at the bus station. Five minutes wait for a bus, and I was chilled to the bone.

Lunch at Café Mila. Usually lunch at Café Mila is excellent, today not so good.

After a wander through Godalming, I returned to Café Mila for afternoon tea.

I usually drop books off to Café Mila, today I picked up a book by Alan Watts.

I could have caught an earlier bus, but as it was hot, and not pleasant on a long bus ride when hot, a caught the 17-50, which as usual was running late.

Connecting train to Guildford late, missed the train to Godalming. I decided to walk along the river and catch the bus.

Only I got as far as The Keystone, and decided to have a beer. I tried one of the beers from the large selection they had out the back for their beer and cider festival.

It was very quiet. One table, had wood carvings.

Bus to Godalming. I got off as the bus neared Godalming, and walked in along the River Wey.

In most places they walk their dogs, in Godalming they walk their horses.

I could hear music. Surely not Staycation Live as I did not think until end of July or early August.

A music festival in the park. What, I do not know, as although I picked up a leaflet for music in the park, May through to Autumn, it only showed Sunday.

A group of kids were playing. They were actually quite good, with a very talented female vocalist. Far better than what was playing in the Pepperpot last week for Godalming Food Festival.

Last week at Godalming Food Festival, I had discussed with a couple of retailers the possibility of following the example of Guildford Independent’s Day. I followed this up with the maps. I spoke with a few more retailers. All thought it an excellent idea, especially if could launch a local currency, so hopefully the idea will take off.

Afternoon tea at Café Mila.

Bus back into Guildford.

Again I stopped at The Keystone. Busy, but quite a pleasant crowd, not obnoxious drunks.

A very hot day. Hot by mid-morning and stayed hot all day.

River Wey

After a cold morning start, a lovely pleasant warm sunny afternoon.

Two trains to Godalming, one to Guildford, then to Godalming.

Prayer card writ, candles lit, for Cristobella and Georgia.

A walk along the River Wey before an excellent lunch at Café Mila.

At Café Mila a photographic exhibition.

A walk along the River Wey and back to Café Mila for afternoon tea.

Catching the No 71 bus at 4-30 it was still pleasantly warm. I thought if I waited another hour, it would be turning cold.

Lots of spring flowers out. Daffodils and primroses by the roadside and in the woods. A lovely patch of daffodils in the churchyard at Godalming. At Witley, the churchyard was carpeted with primroses. Along the banks of the River Wey celandines.

A strange day, some people dressed as though summer, others wrapped in winter coats.

A marked contrast to a month ago, when very cold waiting for the bus.

A marked contrast to a year ago, when winter seemed to last for ever, and certainly lasted into May.
