National Liberation Day

October 28, 2017

I looked out this morning and saw the roads outside Parliament blocked.

Another protest as on Thursday?

I went to investigate.

National Liberation Day, a public holiday.

By the time I arrived, the parades had finished.

When will there be a Liberation Day to mark libation from European Union occupiers who are destroying Greece, bleeding the country to death, with Alexis Tsipras having betrayed his country their puppet?

Duo Goulies & Duo Mpoukies

October 27, 2017

With difficulty, a few days ago, I managed to find Duo Goulies & Duo Mpoukies, only it was closed.

After a cappuccino at Taresso I decided to once again try and find, even though I was going to arrive close to closing time.

I managed to find, close to closing time.

They invited me in, said we are now closed, but it is ok, we close the door and pull down the shutters, but please order a drink as we are closing the machine.

Excellent food made by Nicos, excellent cappuccino from Greek latte art champion Tania whose awards line the shelves.

Although I regret to say I did not order excellent cheesecake, it looked good and tasted good.

Open and airy, very pleasant ambiance.

Coffee mags and other reading material to browse, often featuring Greek coffee shops and baristas, on one the front page World Barista champion Stefanos Domatiotis who I met at Taf, but not Standart which I recommended subscribe to.

Taf supply the coffee.

Once the coffee shop closed, we sat and chatted.

From outside, once closed, would never know it was there, which is why I had problems finding the first time, and even the second time.

A very discrete sign, nothing more.

When the shutters down, would not know it was there, and as I found, almost impossible to find.

And if look it up, find the Greek name Δυο γουλιές & δυο μπουκιές which means two sips and two bites, not as I had surmised the names of the owners.

Cappuccino at Taresso artisan coffee roasters

October 27, 2017

I decided as yesterday, to once again try to find Warehouse Specialty Blends, then if open Duo Goulies & Duo Mpoukies.

Passing by Taresso, as yesterday, an excellent cappuccino. If anything better than yesterday.

I checked Warehouse Specialty Blends to find closed at three. As not far from Lycabettus Hill and a pleasant sunny day, I thought maybe climb to the top, but decided to keep to original plan, try once again to find Duo Goulies & Duo Mpoukies, even though it was going to be close to closing time.

Taresso artisan coffee roasters

October 27, 2017

Yesterday, on my way to Duo Goulies & Duo Mpoukies, which I had found closed on previous visit, I decided on a detour, a long detour, to Warehouse Specialty Blends.

I passed by closed roads, riot police and demonstrations outside Parliament. Maybe something to do with the Metro strike.

On my way I stumbled across taresso artisan coffee roasters. I never did make what I had been looking for.

Excellent cappuccino.

Served by one of their leading baristas on latte art.

Both baristas I had long chat with. The other barista No 2 barista in Greece (second place Hellenic brewers cup championship 2016).

I learnt a lot about coffee.

Outside Athens, taresso artisan coffee roasters have a  micro-roastery, which also supplies coffee to other coffee shops.

Metro strike

October 26, 2017

Roads gridlocked, outside Parliament roads closed.

Why on strike I do not know, or whether or not the demo was connected.

Major problem if wishing to get to Airport, as I did.

No taxis. Had to walk to pick up airport bus.

No bus. One did not turn up, next one very late. An hour wait for a bus. Bus packed.

As a result, miss flight.

Bus back to Athens maybe half an hour late. Packed.

Mr Bean

October 26, 2017

I had been recommended Mr Bean.

A micro-roastery  located outside Athens, with a  small coffee shop across the street from Taf.

I had popped in the previous evening and said I would return.

The owner not there but I found  a very pleasant and competent barista.

She asked of coffee shops in London.

I suggested try Monmouth in Covent Garden, one of the first specialty coffee shops, also try coffee stall at the foot of Hungerford Bridge and the Ethiopia stall on the London South Bank Street Food Market.

She made me an excellent cappuccino.

On the way I tried to find Duo Goulies & Duo Mpoukies. Eventually I did find, only to find closes at four o’clock

V60 and cappuccino at The Underdog

October 26, 2017

Yesterday after a climb to the top of the the Hill of the Muses, then along walk down the Koine Valley, it was to Just Made 33 for something to eat, then try Mr Bean.

Things do not always go to plan.

I could not though pass the end of the road of The Underdog and not pop in.

I was treated to a cappuccino and a V60.

It is very rare to have  a perfect cappuccino.

Today was one of those days.

The V60 poured differently. Instead of a circular motion, poured into the centre, with a very steady fine stream of hot water.

As with the cappuccino, excellent, fruity, almost sweet.

Too late to eat at Just Made 33, hot chestnuts off a stall, then on to Mr Bean.

Cappuccino at Taf

October 26, 2017

I had found Taf on Monday.

Tuesday most of the afternoon at The Acropolis, then a visit to the Roman Agora, I found my way to Taf, dropping off at at Just made 33 for one of their excellent sandwiches and instead of a coffee, excellent fresh lemonade.

A cappuccino.  Also an excellent cake.

Their brew bar is offering coffee Q grade 90+ which is incredible.

Note: Anything over 80 is specialty coffee.

I was recommended try Mr Bean across the road.

Although closed, I was offered their cold brew to try. It was excellent.

A cold brew tower I had not seen before.

The following day, passing by Taf to visit Mr Bean, I learnt the barista who had served me, she was No 2 barista in Greece, and her award was one of those on the shelf.

October 23, 2017

I had tried Taf coffee at Miyu Coffee in Cyprus.

It was not great. Better than over-roasted commodity coffee, but not great.

I was curious.

From Just Made 33 I headed through the graffiti-lined streets of Exarchia where Anarchists and Riot Police engage in Urban Warfare.

Taf is a coffee roastery, tafcafe their coffee shop.

I was surprised to find quite small, though not as small as first appears as over two levels.

For a small coffee shop, amazing number of awards. On one shelf, three awards, and that was only for 2017.  More awards on other shelves.

I ordered a cappuccino. Excellent.

I was then introduced to World Barista champion Stefanos Domatiotis  who made me a V60 using Panama Geisha.

Exarchia is an area of Athens where Anarchists and Riot Police engage in Urban Warfare.

As I walked through the graffiti lined streets I asked a lady had everything closed.

No, that is how it is, the shops close early on Monday. Early being six in the evening.
