Aldershot VE Day 70

The hype sadly far exceeded the expectations.

A few vintage cars in a car park and a bus, music in the park with the bandstand, three women singing songs vintage WWII, a battered old Citroen van serving coffee, a few folks dressed the part, in the town centre stalls selling tat, fruit and vegetable stall with vintage lorry and that was it.

The vintage cars were immaculate.

Time permitting, I may have tried the coffee, Peaberry coffee roasted in Andover. Had they the beans, I may have bought, assuming they could tell me the roast date, but no beans.

To be served, has to be expert barista, even assuming beans are good. They were not grinding afresh for each cup, which is essential for coffee at its best.

Full marks to the greengrocer. He had gone to a lot of trouble. A 1947 Bedford truck, that had once upon a time been used for delivering fruit and vegetables. A wonderful display on the back of the truck, with his stall behind the truck, from which serving fresh strawberries and cream.

Blackbushe Market has collapsed. No information that now market in Aldershot on Saturday. Nor was there on the Thursday market. There was a flier for a market in Farnborough on Sunday. On the Tuesday market in Farnborough, no information new market on Sunday. More people than usual in Aldershot for a Saturday, when usually it is dead.

Aldershot is the home of the British Army. It is where Queen Victoria established the first permanent Army Camp. VE Day 70 was not for Aldershot, it was for Hampshire.

The annual Summer Festival in Farnham is more impressive, as is the Street Food Festival in Godalming or Staycation Live in Godalming.

Across the country, street parties, concerts, yesterday beacons lit, in Moscow massive military parade. Was this pathetic event the best Aldershot could do to mark VE Day 70?

VE Day, Victory Europe Day 70 yeas ago, marked the end of WWII in Europe.

A Saturday market for a trial period in Aldershot.

Half a dozen stalls at best, few people on the street,

A disaster, but the local council can be relied upon to claim a success. The stallholders would beg to differ.

  2. keithpp Says:

One week on, down from six stalls to four stalls, but imbecile leader of the council claims Saturday market a huge success.

Farnham Carnival put Aldershot VE 70 in the shade.
