Traffic free Farnham

Downing Street free of traffic

Downing Street free of traffic

Today, following the carnival procession, people were able to experience traffic free Farnham.

I always thought Downing Street was narrow. Free of cars, free of pollution, I found it to be wide.

Jeremy Hunt MP, has proposed Farnham be traffic free. It should have been done decades ago.

As minimum, Downing Street, Castle Street, The Borough, traffic free.

As an ex-Farnham resident (now Farnborough) returning certain Farnham roads back to traffic free thorougfares, as they were originally designed to be, would suit the town.

However, I fear that Sainsbury’s and Waitrose would block the plans, for obvious reasons. More subjectively, the affluent and influential residents of South Farnham and beyond, who tend to access the town by car, would also object. As would the above average senior amount of seniors who drive.

Those residents typically vote Conservative. Hunt’s commitment to the idea might be tested….

A disaster as Health Secretary, I fully support Jeremy Hunt MP for proposing centre of Farnham be traffic free.

I do not have a map in front of me, and Google does not give street names.

    – length of Downing Street

    – past Lion and Lamb Courtyard and up to road leading to Waitrose

    – Castle Street up to the pub

    – The Borough up to crossroads

This leaves access to car parks, everywhere within easy walking distance.

Deliveries from car parks by hand cart.

Saturday people were able to experience what traffic-free Farnham was like, and it was great. Everyone I spoke to thought it was great.

Farnham is an attractive place, but it is made unattractive by the traffic. The high pollution levels, and the risk of being jostled off the narrow pavements under a car or a lorry.

We cannot allow Waitrose and Sainsbury’s to dictate what happens in our town centres.
