Coffee on the terrace at Sunrise Pearl overlooking the pools and beach.

Two lattes and a freddo cappuccino ordered.

Freddo cappuccino superior to Costa (difficult to be worse) but not of the standard of patisserie amelie.

Nighttime walk along Coast Path

September 27, 2012

Meet me at the pier, said my Russian friend Irena.

It was at her insistence that I found myself walking along the Paralimni-Protaras Coast Path in the dark.

It was surprisingly warm. It was interesting to see the coast path in a different light. In the distance, the lights from the pier reflecting off the sea.

I was reminded of walking along the seafront at Brighton and seeing the lights of Brighton Pier refected in the sea.

On arrival at the Pier, I was greeted by Captain Gregory of Napa King, on whose boat Irena and I had sailed that day.

No sign of Irena, then a shout Keith.

We walked back along the coast path as far as Fig Tree Bay, then walked the short distance to Nicolas Tavern where we had agreed to have dinner.

Dinner with Russian friends at Nicolas Tavern a traditional Greek-Cypriot restaurant.

We ordered salad, cream of mushroom soup, chicken soup, stuffed tomatoes, sea bass (or was it bream), kleftico, sirloin steak.

Kleftico is a traditional Greek-Cypriot dish, lamb cooked slowly, slowly over many hours in a wood-fired clay oven.

For drink: water, house red wine, house white wine, Keo (a local lager).

Food as always at Nicolas Tavern was excellent. Portions are large, food was taken away for later.

To finish off, I had brandy sour (a local drink).

Nappa King sets sail from the pier at Protaras to Famugusta, then to Cape Greco, late morning and early afternoon, a round trip of a little over two hours.

On the way to Famagusta, more passengers are picked up.

Famagusta is seen from afar. At Cape Greco anchor is dropped to allow swimming. At this time of year in the sheltered cove the sea is lovely and warm.

On Tuesday and Saturday Napa King does an evening trip to watch the sun setting.

Coffee at Costa

September 26, 2012
coffee at Costa: freddo cappuccino should not look like this!

coffee at Costa: freddo cappuccino should not look like this!

In the interest of scientific inquiry, coffee at Costa in Protaras in Cyprus. Is their coffee as bad as that in England? How does it compare with patisserie amelie?

Freddo cappuccino (iced cappuccino) is strong black coffee. It is bitter, but not an unpleasant bitter. It has a kick. It is an art to make and requires quality coffee.

Two lattes and one freddo cappuccino were ordered at Costa Coffee. They were made in surprisingly short time, not a good sign.

The latte were ok, milk hides a lot.

The freddo cappuccino should have been dark, almost black, topped with brown, then creamy white.

It was not, it was a browny colour, with creamy white clouds swirling within. Topped by an off-white brownish colour.

The girl who made it was clearly not skilled in a freddo cappuccino.

It had an unpleasant bitter taste, leaving a nasty after taste in the mouth. A sign of poor quality coffee.

The cost, a little over ten euros. For comparison, patisserie amelie less than ten euros, around one euro difference in price.

Price though not the only difference. At patisserie amelie quality coffee, looks good, tastes good.

It is difficult to see why anyone in Protaras would frequent Costa Coffee, when just up the road patisserie amelie serving quality coffee at lower price.

Costa has 15 coffee shops in Cyprus. The intention is to flood the island with Costa Coffee, starting with tourist destinations, as only English tourists stupid enough to frequent Costa.

Costa Coffee in Cyprus is a franchise. They refuse to honour Costa Loyalty Cards.

Why set up a franchise? Why not establish quality coffee shops? Why indeed?

There is one quality coffee shop in Protaras, patisserie amelie (outside Sunrise Beach Hotel).

Black tie activists crash HMRC boss’ retirement do

September 24, 2012

Dave Hartnett let Vodafone and Goldman Sachs off billions in tax. We crashed his retirement do.

HMRC boss Dave Hartnett is the man responsible for cutting dodgy deals with Vodafone, Goldman Sachs and other large corporations that have cost the taxpayer billions in lost revenue.

When we discovered that he was making his retirement speech at an elite tax avoidance conference, we couldn’t resist popping in. We donned our best Goldman Sachs and Vodafone costumes, bought some flowers and knocked up a fake award. This is what happened.

— The Intruders

The only scum in the room were Dave Hartnett and his tax dodging scum mates!

The arrogant piece of shit who called the protesters scum was Robert Venables QC.
