Palm Sunday - Quema de Palmitos
Sunday just passed was Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday is four weeks before Easter. On Palm Sunday Jesus rode into town on a donkey, the streets strewn with palm leaves.
Quema de Palmitos is the burning of the palm leaves to produce ash for Ash Wednesday. It took place outside Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia en la Plaza de Iglesia en Puerto de la Cruz en Tenerife at 5 o´clock on Palm Sunday.
I had seen the notice pinned to the church a few days before. Apart from the participants, I was the only one who attended.
I do not know if this was an ancient tradition resurrected or a new tradition, but in its present form has only taken place for the last fifteen years.

Really interesting! For us Palm Sunday is April the 18th this year , it marks the beginning of the Holy week when Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey and what we usually do is to attend processions carrying holy palms to praise Jesus. After that the palms are turn into crosses to be hung on the wall to keep the evil away.

Something has got lost in translation. I even asked to be certain are we talking of the day Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, the route strewn with palm leaves.
